Champ Bailey...

I think Marshall is gone. So it'd be nice not to miss a beat with a vet like CB.

I don't think his contract would be unreasonable either.

He would bring a great veteran presence too.

I know the team is going young and shying away from FA's but you have got to sign some guys over 30 to give this team some stability.

I think it would be interesting to see what he could do at the safety position, but I don't know if he'd be willing to do that. He has lost a step but he's still good, a guy with his recognition skills would be wonders back there.

I agree with you that we need a vet back there. Gamble should be the one to step up but it doesn't look like that has happened. Bailey would be more of a Minter figure to keep the guys in line. With that being said, I can't really see us pulling the trigger and competing with other teams for someone his age.

I don't think Captain should be on the outside. He's played well there but I don't want him to be a full time starter he's just too little.

I never really even wanted Marshall on the outside he mugs bigger receivers constantly to gain the advantage. To his credit he gets away with it a lot.

Thinking about him at safety brings up another thought about Godfrey. Are his hits/turnovers enough to make up for the constant blown coverages?

Godfrey won't have nearly enough time to blow coverages if we address the DT situation properly in the off season. He's growing as a player and his risk/reward style of play will produce a lot more with a pass rush.

The captain is good for a man scheme which I hope we run more. Even Gamble would look better in more man coverage. It is hard to decide who would fit best until we know what cover we will run this year.

How much of a liability Godfrey is in coverage will also vary based on what we need him to do. I would actually expect he should be doing much better on coverage based on being a corner in college. I wonder if coaching and scheme are factors there.

Captain is going to get the opportunity. He is only a couple inches shorter than your typical corner in the NFL. He has a 39" vertical which makes up for his height.

Reality is we need pressure to help the corners out. I would rather see us invest in the Dline where clearly we need the help more.

I could certainly go with that: Gamble, Baliey, Cap.. along with our LB's... our defense will be good

I said in the free agency thread that I wouldn't be opposed and I stand by that. The thing is that we cannot overpay (we could afford to but we need to sign more than just a CB) the guy and he will probably command a considerable cap hit.

    • No saying he mostly sucks is saying that he doesn’t suck the minority of the time.   Like if he took 17 tests and had a couple of really good showings and a handful of pretty good scores sprinkled in among the typical sub par results.   Like a golfer who went out and shot an 89.  There will be some real nice shots sprinkled in there but at the end of the day it is still 89.
    • It's worth mentioning... Game 1: Oct 11 in Raleigh. 4-3 OT win with a complete starting lineup. Game 2: Dec 13 in Philly. 4-3 SO win without Jaccob Slavin. Game 3: Dec 14 in Raleigh. 3-2 SO win with a complete starting lineup. Game 4: Apr 13 in Philly. 3-2 SO loss with the AHL roster.  Those early season games were no indication of the Canes team that finished the season. Miller and Ehlers were still trying to figure things out, Nikishin was still a work in progress and the Stankoven line was just another line. Make no mistake, the Canes team Philly will see is nothing close to what they saw at any point in the season. If the top line starts producing, Freddie stays hot and the blue line does what it does, this could be a sweep as well.
