I don't know if this is a new years resolution but I am making some serious changes..

My parents used to go in halves with another family and buy a cow. Actually, I think that other family raised the cows, and maybe we just bought half a cow. Anyway, I'd love to do that.

I didn't know that about the eggs. There's a family down the road that sells eggs; I may start buying from them instead of walmart. My neighbor has chickens running all over the place, but I don't know what kind.

Seeing as how China exports eggs by the billions and is the world leading producer, Walmart may have China eggs.

I like the What's Your Beef butcher in ballantyne. Buying local doesn't always guarantee that it's humane/organic but it's better than most I've had.

Organic doesn't mean diddly doo doo anymore.

The hot label right now is "certified humane". It's legit and difficult to do. Eventually it will be corrupted but that's the best label I've seen.

if i go to the grocery store, i try to buy as much local as possible. but we do prefer to go to the farmers market more and more.

up until my mid 20's we ate organic long before it was chic. in fact i had relatives that raised their own cattle and pigs for years. awesome grub.

thp- if you are who I think you are, I might have to start hitting you up for eggs. i "thought" i was getting the best with the free range and such but I guess not.

Also i will look for the link but there are some local farm co ops that you can buy from and they deliver milk, eggs, bacon the whole 9 yards.

Somewhere my late maw maw is laughing at how well we ate from the backyard and now we are so reliant on big corp farms for food.

they actually do. Chickens are just like any other animal. They fight and even can kill each other.

If their on a quaint littel farm where they have their own space then it wouldn't be a problem.

Even on little farms they get there beaks clipped. One so they dont break the eggs but also so they wont peck each other.

Chickens mainly fight any chickens that are introduced later. Which you need to keep seperate until they are used to them.

Yeah you can buy a cow or a pig locally. I haven't bought the cow because for whatever reason the steaks just aren't as good. but i have considered buying a local pig.

Local organic store has lots of stuff and there is a fresh fish guy most of the year who drives back and forth from the beach on thursdays. Don't know if they have eggs but i will look into that this year

I like to eat and eat well, I recently though watched on Netflix "Food Inc" and am shocked at what I am eating. I was always suspicious but now I am completely terrified of what I am eating. The way chickens and cows are being "engineered" to be larger in a shorter amount of time, the fact that cows are not roaming they just sit in feces all day and the chickens sit in dark pens all day, this to me was a bit disturbing. The fact that a tomato has to be gassed to turn red from green to look fresh, this is horrifying to me. So I am finishing out our fridges with all the food we have left and starting over. I guess I can get the veggies and fruits from the farmers market, my concern is about the meat. Where could I buy an entire cow and have it sliced up or multiple chickens in order to freeze them? Anyone have any suggestions or advice....

Ugh... I tho you start reading the bible...

I am who you think I am. I could sell 200 dozen a day if I had them. I have regular customers and then a long waiting list. It's just me so I can only handle so many hens along with the rest of the field. I gave up raising 6 acres of pumpkins because of the time involved with the eggs. I usually do about an acre of pumpkins now. I stopped taking them to the farmers market and only sell through a local tailgate.

I don't debeak or clip wings. Yes, they do peck eggs but I want them to defend off and get away from as many critters as possible. I accept that risk. Plus the chickens that are debeaked can't grub as well as the others and that can mean not getting the right stones for the craw.
