Anyone still want to defend Mike Goodson?

Recommended Posts

Funny a couple of weeks ago everyone was ready to get rid of DWill for Goodson after a couple of games. I was bashed for defending DWill and now look at Goodson. I hope Goodson ends up becoming an elite back, but at this point he is reminding me of Steve Slaton - great talent but can't hold onto the ball. This isn't a one game deal, this has become a disturbing trend. I hope he fixes it, but let this be a reminder to all about proven backs like DWill. This is a "what have you done for me lately league" but let's not discount what DWill has done for years in Carolina. We will not let him go....

Wow the knee-jerk responses of this board are insane. Yes he has a bit of a fumbling problem but his ability as a RB is completely undeniable. He's more explosive than D-Will or J-Stew. Is he ready to be a full-time back? No. But he can definitely handle being a #2 and will be ready to be a #1 in time.

I don't see that Goodson has a very high football IQ. That's where DeAngelo excels. Goodson has made some very questionable decisions on the field this season that leave the average fan saying WTF. He has talent, fumbling can sometimes be corrected, but too many times I find myself thinking, "Dwill would've never done that."

Football IQ is what makes talented RB's great. Lack of football IQ is what makes talented RB's go bust. Goodson is on his way to bust if he doesn't start watching film almost 24/7 in the offseason because something needs to wake this kid up.

Williams > Goodson

I respectfully disagree. The NFL is littered with great talent that can't hold onto the ball. If you can't hold onto the ball you will not play in the NFL period. Steve Slaton is a perfect example.

People claim we can replace Williams/Stewart with Mike Goodson, by what he has shown this season. Granted he has had some nice games, good production behind a banged up O-Line. But IMO his lack of ability to hold onto the ball exceeds his ability to make plays. In plain english, his turnovers hurt us far more than his break out plays.

So far against the Falcons today:

2 Fumbles, and 1 idiotic catch for a loss. I mean really, why go after the ball 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage? Bat it down!

He has never had success holding onto the ball. He has excellent break away speed, he is putting on some weight and it should make him more durable between the tackles. But in all honesty he will be our 3rd down back next season unless there is an injury. D-Will will be resigned (don't think we don't have the cap space to do so, and if you think JR is cheap because of this one season then you are clueless).

So what are your thoughts everyone?

My thought is u desire to kiss Drew Brees' ass
