Make of this what you will...

Only two of the five coaches considered likely possibilities for the Panthers head coaching job are associated with teams that made it into the postseason.

- Jim Harbaugh (Stanford Cardinal, winners of the Orange Bowl)

- Sean McDermott (Philadelphia Eagles, inthe NFC playoffs)

McDermott has yet to be contacted, and there's no indication he will be. Differing stories on Harbaugh, but the bottom line is it's extremely unlikely he'll get the job.

The coaches who have been lined up for interviews (Rivera of the Chargers, Fewell of the Giants) are both part of teams that did not make it to the playoffs.

The last of the bunch - Grimm of the Cardinals - has already been dismissed as a candidate. His team's record was almost as bad as ours.

I'll grant that it's common for good coaches to be part of bad programs.

Still, there's also something to be said for associating yourself with winners.

More names could emerge, of course. We'll see, but for now, it's something to think about.

thats why I dont think we hire a headcoach until after the playoffs.

The NFL no longer makes teams wait to interview coaches whose teams are in the playoffs. There's a window for interviews right now, if they choose.

No indication thus far that they've reached out to anyone except Fewell and Rivera.

They are reaching out to people but I suspect it is being done on the quiet end for some reason. Teams like Denver and San Fran have put out feelers all over.

I think we'll see some interviews on the offensive end too... though time will tell.

No, there isn't. Not for McDermott anyway. The playoff team has to be on a bye week for the coach to be available to be interviewed. The Eagles play Green Bay this weekend.

You may be right. I'll look it up.

I don't necessarily believe these are the only choices (Bruce Arians has been mentioned by the local guys) but if there aren't more guys brought in, I have to admit it gives me pause.

If the rule is correct, what would stop us from interviewing Mike Mularkey or Bruce Arians?

This has been beaten to death, but both of the announced candidates satisfy the Rooney rule. If it didn't exist, I doubt we would have heard of any of them yet.

Understood, but with that said, I think both are legitimate candidates.

Not really sure I want Bruce Arians.

Richardson also made it clear he plans to hire a coach who'll carry out the organization’s wishes, not the coach’s personal agenda.

“I would hope that we would have a head coach that is compatible to the organization,” Richardson said. “And when I say the organization, the first three times we hired a head coach, we talked about what the head coach wanted. We were not specific enough about what we wanted. This time I think we'll be more specific.”

That means both on and off the field.

The Panthers want a coach who will interact more with fans, be willing to do commercials and that sort of thing, and not complain about it. And the other part is about finding a coach who'll follow the team’s blueprint, which is building through the draft and sticking with developing and playing younger players.

That’s something Fox has been reluctant to do.

Anyone know the type of personality Rivera and Fewell have..does it match up with this report?

      The NFL eats giant bad contracts all the time. I looked and the 3rd starts at 6.7 at pick 67 and 6.1 at pick 96. With the way the NFL cap keeps going up and how they all work the cap it really shouldn't be an issue for any team that can get 1 year out of rookies.  Maybe it would cut down on teams taking giant leaps on guys they shouldn't? This would have got Hurney fired in 3 years lol

      Nothing wrong with starting to look for bodies early. It's a long injury filled season. I doubt we get through unscathed.

      We're in alignment regarding Thielen not being a game changer/breaker for the Panthers. Getting the ball into hands of playmakers like TMac and XL is going to open up things more than it is getting it to Thielen underneath (or letting him go after 50/50 balls 20yds downfield in his mid-30s). However, in a room where the other guys are two second year guys and two rookies, having a reliable vet that they can learn from is just as important as it is for the QB to have as a reliable third option. I can see that being worth $8.5M (just 3%) of the $279.2M cap... especially when looking at what's left out there: https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/_/position/wr However, the idea that the team is forcing production to Thielen and leading to losses isn't supported by the data. Targets, not receiving yards, are how you can tell if a player is being "force fed." In the two games mentioned, let's look at the other players available... vs. TB 10 targets - Adam Thielen 9 targets - David Moore 8 targets - Tommy Tremble, Xavier Legette 3 targets - Jonathon Brooks 1 target - Dan Chisena, Feleipe Franks, Stephen Sullivan vs. PHI 11 targets - Adam Thielen 8 targets - Xavier Legette 5 targets - Chuba Hubbard, David Moore 2 targets - Tommy Tremble 1 target - Ja'Tavion Sanders, Deven Thompkins There isn't exactly a bounty of other names to throw the ball to. In those games, AT was one of the top 2 WRs. Diontae had been gone by that point.   So... yea. Agreed that Thielen isn't exactly carrying the team in his mid-30s, but it's undeniable that he was the most reliable target last season that still has quite a bit of value this season. Whether or not that value is reflected in a manner folks think on the contract is going to come down to personal taste. However, the idea that the team was forcing production to AT and that was the reason behind some losses couldn't be further from the truth.
