Assuming Newton/Fairley/Peterson didn't come out...

Gabbert is in no way shape or form worthy of the #1 pick, Bowers is a one year wonder, Green I can get behind.

Here is the problem with us...among many.

Bowers is a good DE. We spent the equivalent of the 2009 1st on a DE (Everette Brown). We have Charles Johnson (All-Pro caliber DE), Tyler Brayton, Greg "Ed" Hardy, and Brown already at that position, plus Norwood occasionally there.

Green is an elite receiver. We spent the equivalent of the 2011 33rd overall on a WR (Armanti Edwards). We have Steve Smith, David Gettis, and Brandon Lafell already at that position, plus David Clowney occasionally there.

Gabbert is a good QB. We spent two picks in the 2010 draft on QBs.

Our biggest need is a franchise quarterback. Jimmy Clausen can be a decent quarterback and an above-average backup. Blaine Gabbert, with a beefed-up line, can be a franchise quarterback.

The pick should be Gabbert. It'll be Green.

LPF, do you think there is a good chance Newton doesn't come out?

Unfortunately...yes. My friends in the program are divided...one says, "he's gone. Don't worry." The other says, "he's staying, he told a recruit to come to AU for the '11 season so he could play with him."

At this point, Newton and Fairley in my opinion, may end up doing what the other does.

I think we go BPA which is Green, so agree there. I disagree it should be Gabbert. It should probably be Dareus/Fairley.

Blaine Gabbert does have an incredible skill-set. He's got an arm like people wouldn't believe, and he played in a decent conference. He could be a true franchise player. One thing that worries me, though, is him having to adjust to the under center snaps, because he does not take a ton of them.

ffs... what a terrible year to have the #1.

it would figure. Cam's going to blow away Oregon with his arm, prove his doubters wrong totally about his passing ability, then decide to stay.... and Fairley do the same.

Figures. oh well.

Fairley is #1 on my board overall. No question. He will be a star in the NFL barring injury.

Panthers won't pick Newton because of his "past." Won't pick Bowers because, honestly, we don't need him. We really don't need Green. We need a DT and a QB, and picking a WR doesn't solve those problems. If Fairley comes out he is the pick.

Gabbert is a taller, stronger Delhomme. Fiery playmaker. Takes too many risks. We'll see a lot of "Damn you Blaine! Why throw that???" along with "Awesome throw by Blaine."

I'll add one more to that. Gabbert is a mobile Ryan Mallett. Mallett is like a statue in the pocket, but Gabbert can shuffle his feet, and definitely pick up the first down with his legs. (I'm not saying he's Mike Vick, but he's not too far from Aaron Rodgers.)

Depending on who the new coach is, we could be looking at Peterson, if he declares. Ron Rivera likes to have good corners, because he is such an aggressive blitzer, so, we'll see.

yeah I don't see us taking Green personally, but there are options outside of that.

I just feel like the FO is really looking for QB... and since they have made it clear FA acquisitions will come after the CBA I expect the draft to address it.

    • Agreed.  Unless a DE is a Julius Peppers type, it takes a couple of years to really develope.  I am hoping we can get one to go with Prince and Scourton.  Or another Interior Dlineman might work as well.
    • Great work Dan. This is the first time in a long time heading into day 1 of the draft that I don’t care which way we go.
    • I don't think it's about Bryce's ego. I think it's about Tepper's. Bryce was Tepper's draft pick. Everything that's been done has been to protect the image.  New HC with a shiny contract fired after he loses interest immediately after he supposedly drafted his guy. He can't make an offense for him because he's the QB that fits his style of offense. Bryce's rookie season is one of the worst in history. It was obvious he wasn't ready. He was named starter without any real camp competition. No real preseason reps. Coach keeps playing him despite terrible play.  A new coach and GM are hired on the condition that Bryce is the guy. No searching for a new QB. It's Bryce or else.  Bryce is benched year 2 for multiple games, replaced by Dalton who stunk it up proving he's washed up, then Bryce comes back in after Dalton injures his thumb and finishes the season. Dalton's contract is up, plenty of younger, higher upside FAs available. Dalton is brought back 2 years guaranteed as a "mentor". Jack Plummer, so bad in 24', brought back to camp in 25' and lo and behold, he's still terrible and has no business being on a field.  Other QBs brought in, the most recognizable being Hooker. All those brought in so bad even the PS can't hold them.  And now, after 3 years of bottom tier QB performance, with Dan saying we need to improve our QB room, we bring in a QB that's not passed for over 2500 yards in either of his 2 seasons as a starter, before he's benched and sent to the life of being a backup.  The common denominator in all of this is there's never been any real competition here, even when it was justified. After last year, it's debatable if he's starting QB material. Good moments and horrific moments. From one minute to the next, you don't know what you're gonna get.  So if you ask yourself why some of us feel bringing in KP is a joke, it's because it looks how it's always looked. That everything being done is to prove that David Tepper was right when he made the choice to draft Bryce and everything done since has been to protect that decision. Bringing in another QB with even the potential to challenge Bryce was always out of the question.
