Oliver Luck says his son's decision not a slight against the Carolina Panthers

But the father of Stanford star quarterback Andrew Luck said his son’s decision to stay in school and forego the NFL draft had nothing to do with not wanting to play for the last-place Panthers, who are coming off a 2-14 season and own the No. 1 pick.

“Absolutely not,” Luck told Carolina Growl in a telephone interview Thursday night. “It’s not a slight on Carolina at all. Whether it was the Carolina Panthers or the Oakland Raiders or the Miami Dolphins, it didn’t really make a difference to Andrew.”

He said his son never got to that point.

He said Andrew's decision was all about two things – he wanted to stay in school and get his degree in architectual engineering (he plans to finish up in the spring of 2012) and play football another year with his buddies.

Oliver Luck said he’s met Panthers owner Jerry Richardson before, saying that he was impressed with him and has the utmost respect for him. He said he did not talk with Richardson leading up to his son’s decision.

“I know there are some people who will be upset, but it’s no slight against Carolina,” Oliver Luck said. "He's always been committed to getting his degree."

“Andrew is a competitive guy. He’s looking forward to playing in the NFL and playing against the best there is. He knows it’s a tough league. You have to be committed. He’s spent a lot of time talking to Peyton Manning about what it takes to play in the league and what it takes to be prepared. I know he wants to do it when the time is right. It’s a matter of when he takes that step.”

There's no compelling reason for him to say anything at all.

We're projecting this stuff on him out of "jilted girlfriend' feelings, but objectively speaking, Luck's decision making process doesn't revolve around the Panthers.

Exactly. Sheesh, I guess now we're gonna be driving past Luck's house at 4am drunk playing Freebird really loud.

This is what I heard a lot of media reporting even before the draft order was determined.

I was irritated at him earlier, and thought he kind of made a foolish move (which part of me still thinks) but I just don't care anymore.

We have a job to do, so let's go do it.

If our entire team revolved around one unproven QB then we were in big trouble anyways.

do a pro & con list on reasons why Luck should declare or not and it doesn't make much sense for him to stay..

the major factor based on if Harbaugh leaves.. if he stays, then it's not such a bad idea..

if Harbaugh leaves, then Luck staying, whether the team missing out be the Panthers or anyone else, is hardly a smart choice..

Were it me making the decision, I'd have declared too. But Manning didn't. Leinart didn't. Locker didn't. It's just the decision some guys make.

Most if the time it hurts you in the wallet though. Rookie pay scale will be in full effect next year and he may get a 3rd of what he could this year. Im sorry but if its between winning the 100million lotto and the 30 million I will take the 100 thank you.

      My read is they intended to try and get points but that first run and usage of the clock was done to hedge against things going poorly. Basically they shouldn't need all that time to score since they had multiple timeouts. Dirting that second play put us in a no-win situation. Sure you can run on 3rd down but ARI had timeouts so they still likely get the same result.

      I never said he had a good game in the Denver game.  As you said we had a good first drive ending in Bryce throwing a slant to XL for a TD.  It was garbage time but the back shoulder throw to Coker for the late TD was a great throw.   Throws like these in bad games are why I say he "can" do it and has the physical tools.  The question is can he do it consistently, continue to improve, grow and become our QB of the future.  Up to this point that was a hard no but with a new head coach and Bryce in his 2nd year it was 100% the right call to play out the year and see if he got better.  He did.   Two games into this year is still more of the up and down quality of play and coaching but there is still plenty of potential and we have 16 more games to decide if it's worth it to continue down this path. I don't know what will happen but I know cutting him or benching him now makes zero sense on any level. I said of those last 10 games we were only blown out in 2 of them.  I'll concede the Denver game was a blow out.  So 3 blowout loses and 7 competitive games, 4 of which we won, all decided by less than a TD.  Sounds like a team growing, improving and getting better.  All I want to do is see where that leads and if those examples of starting NFL level quarterbacking can continue to improve and become more consistent.   Anyone with pride would retire?  Laughable.  Do all of you quit in your daily lives every time things get tough or don't go your way?
