You're Marty Hurney... how do you approach the offseason? What moves do you make? Basically, what's your plan?

Mine:

HEAD COACH: Ron Rivera (99% done anyway)

OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR: John Ramsdell

DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR: Greg Manusky

RE-SIGN:

Ryan Kalil

Charles Johnson

James Anderson

Thomas Davis (2-year incentive deal for injuries)

Dante Rosario

Derek Landri

TRADE:

DeAngelo Williams (franchise + trade) = 3rd rounder

Steve Smith = 3rd/4th rounder

2011 DRAFT:

1st: A.J. Green

3rd: BPA (DT, OL, TE, CB)

3rd (Williams): BPA (DT, OL, CB, TE)

3rd (Peppers comp.): BPA

3rd/4th (Smitty): BPA

4th-7th: BPA + the best kicker in the draft

FREE AGENCY:

QB Alex Smith, 49ers: He's still fairly young and coming off his best season yet. He'll push Jimmy, but won't be someone who will cost a ton and won't keep us from drafting a QB next year in the 1st.

OG Carl Nicks, Saints: One of the best guards in the league and free agency. Would be our only big "splash" in FA.

DT Paul Soliai, Dolphins: A big space-eater; think Kemo, but younger. Would come fairly cheap, but is a solid player.

DT Anthony Adams, Bears: A solid veteran DT. Nothing special, but would help to stabalize the interior DL while we develop any DT's we may draft.

Adam Terry, RT, Rams: A solid veteran RT who can start if Otah gets hurt again.

I like the fact you actually put thought into your depth chart and not out of the ordinary scenarios. But if Smith is gone looking at your depth chart and seeing no vet receiver to be a leader to the young receivers is kinda iffy to me. I don't want Gettis/Lafell trying to show AJ the ropes of being an NFL receiver, we need a leader there, but which WR in FA will have the best impact and be willing to mentor the progressing young receivers all while riding the pine?

4th-7th: BPA + the best kicker in the draft (agree with need for a kicker, unless there's seemingly a better one in next year's draft)

OG Logan Mankins/Carl Nicks: Whichever we could get. Make him the top paid Guard in the league.

DT Haloti Ngata: Throw an almost-Haynesworth style contract at him, see if he bites. If not...

CB Nnamdi Asomogha: Use money woulda been spent on Ngata for Aso. If he isn't interested...

DT/CB: Not sure who is left, but best young talent at these spots available. Slightly overpay if you have to, but not by too much.

Which is understandable, you went by possibilities and not dreaming. Now if you put signing both Ngata and Nnamdi is a possibility then I'd disagree with you.

Vet RG, can't see Nawlins letting Nicks go.

Vet DT, Ngata is a pipe dream.

QB- Alex Smith, Kyle Bulger or see if Kyle Orton can be had.

Draft Green, top CB in 3rd and depth there on out. Munnerlyn can start opposite of Gamble, his tenacity and technique make up for his size.

I wouldn't try to move Smith unless he wants to go. Smith, Green, Gettis and LaFell would be awesome, especially with a run game and decent QB.

I'm not crazy about VY either, dude is the most ignorant sounding person I've ever heard speak...and I'm in the military

BUT he is an athlete, he's young, and he knows how to win. With Smitty, Green, Gettis, Lafell, Deangelo, J-Stew, and the O-line back in shape (plus Nicks or Mankins (probably Mankins)) he wouldn't need to be a genius to make it work.

I agree on Rivera and Ramsdell. Still unsure about the DC.

DeAngelo Williams = 3rd rounder

Steve Smith = player swap for a DT. Maybe Fat Albert.

2011 Draft -

1st. Patrick Peterson CB

take the Peppers, Williams, and Smith pick and trade up with them for a

2nd. Marvin Austin

3rd. Benjamin Ijalanab OL

4th. Jarvis Jenkins DT

Free Agency -

QB Alex Smith - Would give us a legit young starter and we could let Jimmy sit and learn.

WR James Jones - If Green Bay lets him go we should grab him to add to our young WR corp.

TE Daniel Fells - Big old school type of TE.

CB Champ Bailey - His experience will help develop Peterson.

No way we get rid of Deangelo Williams. D-Will is WAY better than Goodson and Stewart. Goodson doesn't have the size to run between the tackles (effectively) and he can't hold onto the ball. Stewart is injury prone and is yet to complete a full Training Camp. And you guys want to auction off a top 5 running back in the NFL? Laughable.

We will resign D-Will. We will ether keep all of our runningbacks, or trade away Goodson in order to help fill positions of NEED in the draft. If Smitty is gone, you better believe we bring in a Veteran WR in Free Agency/Trade.

Oh, and do we actually get compensation for Peppers? If so, is it really a 3rd? Never knew that.

Williams has missed more games with injury than Stewart and the only games Stewart missed were with a concussion, which can't really be avoided. William is not that much if better at all than Stewart, they are different backs with different styles. Williams could not do what Stewart does between the tackles just like Stewart is not as good at cut backs as Williams.

      Like many of the old heads, I’ve been here for a long time.  I got a lot of respect for everyone on this board for your dedication to this team.  We’ve all been through it during the tougher years. At this point in life, I’m not one to judge anyone’s level of dedication, or their reasons why anymore.  Time, and a lot of bad football, will do that.  For me, it’s simple.  We share a common bond.  For that, I love and appreciate all of you crazy SOB’s. For me, last season was at a minimum, entertaining.  BY lead a young team to multiple come from behind 4th qtr wins.  That showed me heart, and that he has the clutch gene.  That’s the wildcard intangible.  For me, that was fun to watch even  if it was mindbogglingly frustrating at times.  Over the past two seasons, we have progressively built a better team around him.  On paper, the defense should be better this season.  That’ll help.  Let’s see what he can do as the other guys continue to develop too.  Besides, his contract is cheap for a few more years, and we just made some smart cap decisions during the draft. Let’s see how it shakes out.

      I would very much liked to have seen Jake Delhomme's career if Tommy Jone no hurt Jake.  I just know that roster and the leadership were destined to hit paydirt but Jake was never the same after the elbow injury, and unfortunately he was the sole reason they didn't make it back to the big one.  I think that 08 team was the best in the league, and Jake masked his inability well all season til the Arizona game put it all on display.  I'll go back to the season prior even and say the 07 team was primed to be a competitor.  Jake was off to a fantastic start that year (for a Panthers QB).  They may have been a championship caliber club for a few seasons after 08 too.
