Comparing the last 4-3 defensive roster Rivera had to ours...

The last roster Rivera had was the 2006 chicago bears which was a very fine defense. 1st in NFC in scoring. I'm assuming we resign pretty much everybody except for Marshall. I don't know much about the 2006 Bears but hopefully my limited knowledge is enough.

Starting from the Secondary down....

At Safety we have

Daniel Manning(rookie) and Chris Harris(2nd year)

vs.

Sherrod Martin(3rd year) and Charles Godfrey(4th year)

WIN

While Godfrey has blown his fair share of coverages he also has made some plays. Whether or not he was the beneficiary of tipped balls, I can't discredit him for it. I doubt the 2nd year Harris looked any better if not worse.

Martin has shown great range and while he has size I never expected him to be dealing some of the blows he has this season. I would put him over a rookie Daniel Manning any day.

Cornerback

Charles Tillman(4th year) and Nathan Vasher(3rd year)

v.s.

Chris Gamble(8th year) and ???????? plus Captain Munnerlynn(3rd year) for NB

PUSH

I think Gamble is a solid player but we have no idea who the #2 will be. I really like Munnerlynn as the 3rd option I think he's developing into one of the better nickelbacks in the league. But we have no idea who the #2 is. I think we will find a good replacement though.

Weakside linebacker

Lance Briggs(4th year)

vs.

Thomas Davis(6th year)

PUSH

While I think Davis is better than briggs he's torn his ACL twice so who knows if he will ever be the same?

Middle linebacker

Brian Urlacher(6th year)

vs.

Jon Beason(5th year)

SLIGHT WIN

It's close but at this stage I'd say Beason is better.

Strongside linebacker

Hunter Hillenmeyer(4th year)

vs.

James Anderson(6th year)

WIN

I'd say they they are similar players but Anderson is looking to step into the top portion of the league while Hillenmeyer was a solid option in a group that didn't ask him to do much.

Defensive End

Alex Brown(5th year), Adewale Ogunleye(7th year), and Mark Anderson(rookie)

v.s

Charles Johnson(5th year), Greg Hardy(2nd year), Everette Brown(3rd year) and Eric Norwood(2nd year)

SLIGHT WIN

While it's close the youth and upside on our group takes the cake. Johnson is entering his prime while Hardy has shown great potential. Brown and Norwood are good 3rd down threats.

Defensive Tackle

Tank Johnson(3rd year), Tommie Harris(3rd year), and Ian Scott(4th year)

vs.

:spam::spam::spam::spam::spam::spam::spam::spam:

MASSIVE FAILURE

3 great tackles that are still present in the league doing their thang. We have NOTHING at tackle. Absolutley nothing.

So in review

Saftey WIN

Corner PUSH

Outside linebacker WIN

Middle linebacker SLIGHT WIN

Defensive End SLIGHT WIN

Defensive Tackle DIARRHEA

Assuming we bring in legitimate help at defensive tackle I think we have a top 10 defense easy. Probable top 5. Will the offense keep them off the field? Not quite sure.

But overall I think we will field a very impressive team in 2011.

If you think about it the Bears D in 2006 (and Devin Hester) got them to the Super Bowl with a very very below average offense but being in San Diego hopefully showed him a thing or two on how to run an offense. What personel to use, when to use it, and who to run it. Back to defense I think if we solidfy the DL on the inside, then things could be really looking up for us.

IIRC didn't we have Ian Scott for one year a few years back and he literally did jack sh!t for us, just saying. You could take him off the list and their DT's from '06 still demolish the crap we put on the field this year.

Urlacher was better then than Beason is now.

Gamble is a very good cover corner, but not the playmaker of Vasher or Tillman. I think with Munny at the 2, which o don't want, I think we have an edge.

What you're eluding to, and rightly so, is that the unit does look a lot like what Rivera terrorizes the league with.

Defensive Tackles is the biggest need on defense. IF we are able to fine a real playmaker there, it'll allow the whole defense to play better. I liked what I saw from Landri this year I think with the help of a big defensive tackle taking double teams we would be able to see his play improve as well. The second biggest need is a shut down corner. Gamble is a solid starter, and Munnerlyn is a very good nickleback. But we need someone who can shutdown those big name receivers. Filling those two postition, I wouldn't be surprised if we had a top five defense.

With Luck not entering the draft, the biggest need on offense is OL... Clausen didn't light it up back there this year, neither did Moore, or anyone eles. Even Manning and Brady need a good OL to be productive. I still would like to see someone like Shaun Hill come here until we found our franchise quarterback. ( If that is still Clausen then until he's ready). I liked what I saw from the WR this year, and I think when they are able to get the ball more, they'll only improve.

      In my opinion Fitterer was probably right about not paying McCaffrey. Now not wanting to "pay RBs" in my opinion isn't something you want to set in stone, to me it all comes down to the individual.

The following example uses Andrew Luck's rookie contract as an example. "Take Andrew Luck, the first overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft. I'm not necessarily referring to you Tuka, but it seems to me that others simply don't want to understand that fact which is why they're reacting to what I'm saying negatively. How odd. In any event, I have a better general understanding of why signing bonuses are used now, and it's generally to fit salaries under the cap. Surely players, whether they be rookies or not, love a signing bonus because they get a good portion of their money up front. This in turn gives them more security and probably amounts to tax benefits as well. I also understand why teams would not want to use signing bonuses, particularly for players or draftees who have a higher probability of being gone before a contract even ends.
