Will Rivera bring any players with him?

About Volek, wasn't this thread about who you "think" Rivera will bring with him, not who do you "want"? Is that not what the OP said? Smh

Perhaps we should rephrase the point we are making.. (or rather, I am making)

Rivera's first big mistake ever: bringing in Volek when he could trade for Orton.

The Panthers believe Clausen will emerge as a quality starter, the best they’ve ever had. But they can’t believe he’ll be ready to start next season on opening day (whenever – because of the inevitable lockout – that might be).

The solution might be to rent a starter. I have three free-agent candidates.

Seattle’s Matt Hasselbeck is 35 and prone to get hurt. But he’s a talent and a leader. Ask New Orleans.

Donovan McNabb was treated with contempt by Washington. He’s 34 and he might have one more season in him. Dedicate it to the Redskins. And he’s still Donovan McNabb.

Billy Volek of San Diego – new head coach Ron Rivera’s turf – is 34, has low mileage and is better than you think.

Hasselbeck, McNabb and Volek aren’t going to win a Super Bowl next season, but neither is Carolina. The plan is to get out of the gutter and move into position to. They believe Claussen is the guy to get them there.

Seems to me before I bring in Volek I would consider resigning Moore. Volek has been in the league for 14 years and will be 35 in April. He has 10 starts (3-7) but is highly thought of in San Diego. Moore has 13 starts and is 7-6 as a starter. The San Diego offense and our offense aren't that different outside of the terminology so I don't know if Volek is an upgrade.

A lot depends on the OC.

Funny how last week we were taking Luck if he comes out. Now this week Clausen is going to be a quality starter. Funny how the worm turns quickly. Given we have been so great drafting and developing QBs, my faith in Hurney's opinion regarding a quarterback is less than overwhelming.

Clausen shouldn't start for 2-3 years.. anyone that thinks otherwise is setting themselves up for failure where we then have to hear how Clausen sucks.. well no poo..

we need a vet to play until Clausen shows he's ready (if that ever happens)

McNabb (hope he doesn't expect 8 mil a year) or find a way to bring Orton to the Carolinas..

I remember watching Volek lighting it up with the Titans years ago on Monday Night Football. He would be a great addition at qb and shouldn't cost much. All the Wide receivers would be a nice addition as well.

Eric Weddle would be awesome to have, I remember when people were ranting about how good he was in college and how bad they wanted us to draft him. He shut down Calvin Johnson in the 2005 Emerald Bowl and we all know how good Calvin Johnson, so obviously this guy can play great defense. San Diego gave up a lot to get this kid in the draft and unless SD has cap issues I don't see him leaving.

    • TBH, these are the kind of players that get weeded out of professional sports pretty quickly. Also, CMC is not that guy. There is zero indication that he isn't competitive.
    • I like the free agency. It actually helps basically all schools across the board. Pretty much only ancient HC's and/or HC's that haven't been able to adjust have been complaining about the free agency. Your fortunes can be made or broken every offseason. It's not like before where a bad recruiting class or two meant multiyear purgatory.  I will never understand all the bellyaching about the NIL. If you want to talk about what ruined college athletics, it has been naked greed. Conference expansions for TV revenue, ever skyrocketing AD and facilities costs and now the attempts to permanently ruin the postseasons(football and basketball).  All the kids did was get a very well deserved piece of a very, very, VERY broken pie.
    • Nobody is saying they don't count against the cap, because yes, they technically do count against the cap as it's money the team is paying and it needs to be accounted for. But what you're not grasping it seems is that if a player gets $10 million guaranteed in their contract, whether they get literally $0 as a signing bonus or $8 million as a signing bonus, it doesn't change the overall cap hit of the contract, because cap hits are about the guaranteed money, not how much is paid up front. The only thing that how much is paid up front changes, is how the cap hit can be spread out amongst the years. So yes, technically there could end up being a slightly bigger cap hit in year 3 and 4 due to a bigger signing bonus, but if that is the case, it also means there will be a lesser cap hit in years 1 and 2 than there would have been with a smaller bonus.  But over the length of the contract, the size of the signing bonus has literally zero affect on the overall cap hit of the contract, because THAT part of it is 100% about the guaranteed money and nothing else.
