Pat Yasinskas on Cam Newton: Go get him.

"If the Panthers think Cam Newton is a franchise QB, then they'd draft him no matter what pundits said" is what I think was meant by the article. This is very different from, "Cam Newton is a franchise QB and the Carolina Panthers would do well to draft him no matter what the pundits said." Can you see the difference between the two statements?

During the ESPN NFL SOUTH chat today

Me

Hey Pat, Who do you see Carolina drafting with the first pick?

Pat Yasinskas (1:25 PM)

Personally, I'd take Fairley. But I want to hear what Carolina fans think of Cam Newton. I usually travel on Saturdays and only got to see a handful of Auburn games. I was really impressed by Newton. But I know a lot of draft gurus are saying he's not a No. 1 overall pick. Let's hear what Carolina fans think.

So then why the f**k is this news?

Put it in another god damn thread and STFU

Wow... so I start a thread linking an ESPN article, then I get accused of lying, and now you're telling ME to STFU and start another thread?

All I did was to quote the guy. I didn't switch his words around. I didn't even say he said to take him as the #1 pick. I highlighted an idea HE had, which I agree with. I followed that up with my comments.

Let me help you out...you and KT are the only people that think he we should draft Cam. It has nothing to do with race and everything to do with skill set. No QB is worth #1. Unless we are magically able to trade out of a pick that no one wants we will not be drafting him, OK?

Are you Marty Hurney or Danny Morrison? Cause unless you are, you have no possible way of knowing what the Panthers will do.

Yeah, I can, and that's not what I did AT ALL. I didn't switch any words around. I didn't change what the guy said. I simply quoted him as saying something, which he did.

because he's black.

So is that why you decided to start the thread and pitch your angle. A half-assed attempt at highlighting certain areas on an article that you misunderstood and was written by a barely credible "expert".

Did you really think you were gonna win people over with this thread? or were you lookin to pick a fight?

I guess I'm entertained. . . and sad at the same time.

except your title says Yas says "Go get him", when the actual statement is much more of a "if this then go get him", which puts a totally different spin on it.

If he had said, "Cam newton is a franchise quaterback, go get him" then your title would be accurate. Since the quote is "If Cam Newton is a franchise quarterback, go get him" (paraphrasing of course) your quote is misleading because it suggests Yas is putting a stamp on something he isn't.

Also any time the guy says "I want to hear what fans think" about a decision like a #1 draft pick you have to wonder how he is making his decisions in the first place.

To base (or even support) your opinion on something Pat Y said is not smart. I'd be all for trading down and taking this guy in the middle of the first round if we can. But NO to using #1 on him. Gotta go with BPA. I think it's AJ Green, some think it's Fairley (I wouldn't be upset if that was our pick, but I prefer Green). One player who we can pretty much all agree is NOT BPA is Newton. All this "pick for need" talk is the opposite of good draft strategy...the fact that Yas actually said "pick for need" proves that he is as big an idiot as I've always believed. You pick BPA (preferably one that fits a need)...but the BPA filter goes through first.

People around here act as if it is a foregone conclusion we won't use the #1 on him.

Until draft day comes, we won't know for sure.

And regarding KT's comments... normally I'd argue he's being a hate-monger... but he's right this time. When people are willing to say the stuff they did in your quote of mine, it's tell-tale of a larger undercurrent of attitudes that others hold. Comparing Jamarcus Russell to Cam Newton is another example of what I see as that undercurrent.

so if there's uncertainty about him right now and youre aware of it. . . AND many facts point to uncertainty. Why are you lobbying for him? Let our scouts do their jobs and who knows, maybe he'll prove differently at the combine. Until then, with the facts you have now, youre not going to convince anyone of jack poo.

Brady has brains, Manning has brains, Ryan has brains, Rogers has brains. You see a pattern? Does he have a high aptitude for learning? Thats the question....Vince Young scored horrible on the wonderlic...

The subject lines on this forum are 85 characters, however, if you go beyond 55 or so (might be 58), it truncates your subject.

Many forums are the same way, so I keep my subjects concise.

If you think my subject is misleading, which I don't, because he IS saying to go get him if we think he's worth it, then report it. A mod can change it.

Well that's just it. I believe the weight of the facts supports his inclusion in a #1 pick conversation.

Many don't, but when I ask why their reasons are very thin, or are based on subjective opinion.

When Luck was being discussed, I was all for it. The assertion that he was going as #1 for us was accepted without a problem. Yet even HE knew he wasn't ready for the Pros.

But here we have Newton. The stats, the rewards, the physical aptitude measurements are all well above average for a player coming into the Draft. Apart from some family issues, what's the REAL TANGIBLE downsides?

I'm reading threads that we should keep Clausen as our starter... we should bring in old vets who are washed up and have been in the bottom of the league for years. Why? WTF? That's not going forward... that's moving backwards, or staying where we are.
