How I Think the Draft Shakes Out...

I think Carolina sets up a partner with a another team that wants Green or Fairly, uses the #1 pick to pick one of them, then about mid round, if the player they really want is still there, they pull the trigger with that team swap picks, and pickup an additional pick in either the 2nd or 3rd round. Its pointless to swap picks first and then pick because you could do so in vain and miss out on the player you were targeting. Make Sense? I think so.

I agree it makes sense. Wouldn't mind seeing that happen, that way we're safe if the guy we woulda held out for in the middle (after trading down) isn't there we can just keep Green or Fairley.

Can you even do that? I thought you had to then trade the player after a contract is in place. I really have no idea though.

No, when you use a draft pick on someone, even before you have a contract you own the rights to the player. I believe you can then trade those rights to someone else. I believe it's the same thing that happened with Eli for Rivers + picks.

I know that if there is no CBA players can't be traded for draft picks, but can rights to players that were drafted be traded?

I could see us ether trading down with CLE or STL for there chance to draft Green. Then picking up Fairly, and then a shocker us trading back up to select a QB. That really would not shock me. I think if Newton or Mallett falls we will see them trade up and pick them.

Both Mallett and Newton have character concerns... and concerns on the field too, but it is possible, especially after the combine and if they impress in interviews.
