Why Rivera was the right hire?

Don't be too certain about that

Exactly...all we have is the system, the foundation, not sure we have all the peices here (i.e. players) to make it work just yet. That will come in time but don't expect a #1 defense next season.

Offence will take a lot long I suspect with no decent available QB's out there.

But but, Sean McDermont took over for Jimmy Johnson.

Well D was good last year for the defense we were running and how the offense was. Im not sure how good our personnel really is with the Jim Johnson 4-3 scheme.

That's my point. Different system all together. Most of our players may do well but it's not certain that they all will thrive in this syatem.

If you read the Chargers boards you read about how Rivera took average talent and made them into the #1 D in the NFL. I am hoping he can do that here. I think we have good talent at LB (w/ TD healthy). Everywhere else we are average or worse. Of course drafting a solid DT or two could give us a respectable DL in a hurry. DBs would probably be OK if we were getting more pressure up front.

Correct and it will just have to play out. Rivera will get the most out of these guys I have no doubt but will it be good enough for him. We will see with the draft and FA what he thinks of the players he has on the team. That should give us a clue as to what may be ecpected with the D.

    • No saying he mostly sucks is saying that he doesn’t suck the minority of the time.   Like if he took 17 tests and had a couple of really good showings and a handful of pretty good scores sprinkled in among the typical sub par results.   Like a golfer who went out and shot an 89.  There will be some real nice shots sprinkled in there but at the end of the day it is still 89.
    • It's worth mentioning... Game 1: Oct 11 in Raleigh. 4-3 OT win with a complete starting lineup. Game 2: Dec 13 in Philly. 4-3 SO win without Jaccob Slavin. Game 3: Dec 14 in Raleigh. 3-2 SO win with a complete starting lineup. Game 4: Apr 13 in Philly. 3-2 SO loss with the AHL roster.  Those early season games were no indication of the Canes team that finished the season. Miller and Ehlers were still trying to figure things out, Nikishin was still a work in progress and the Stankoven line was just another line. Make no mistake, the Canes team Philly will see is nothing close to what they saw at any point in the season. If the top line starts producing, Freddie stays hot and the blue line does what it does, this could be a sweep as well.
