Vince Young says he plans to compete to start

ShareEmailPrintNASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—Vince Young(notes) has his sights set on competing to be a starter for an NFL team.

Young says in a segment aired by ESPN on Wednesday night that he will work to let his next team know he’s an elite quarterback who just wants to win games and be the best. Asked if he could work as a backup, Young laughed.

“I’m going to go into the organization, the team, and compete. That’s all I can do, and let them make their own decision after that,” Young said. “Definitely I am a starting quarterback, an elite quarterback in the NFL. I want to go ahead and start. But like it always is, the coaches have the last word.”

Vince Young last played on Nov. 21. Tennessee owner Bud Adams actually had the last word Jan. 5 when the Titans announced that they would either release Young or try to trade him away because he’s not in their plans for 2011. Adams agreed with coach Jeff Fisher the quarterback drafted No. 3 overall in 2006 had to go after an incident Nov. 21.

That’s when Young cursed at the coach and blew out of the locker room. The Titans placed him on injured reserve two days later, and Young had surgery to repair a torn tendon in his right thumb. But the team can’t release Young until Feb. 7, and a trade won’t happen until the NFL has a new labor deal.

A trade isn’t likely considering the rest of the NFL knows the Titans aren’t keeping Young for 2011, and Young’s contract has him due $8.5 million in salary for this season.

Young said he felt he and Fisher had a great relationship but didn’t get along with different personalities. He told a reporter Jan. 5 that Fisher could have trusted him more. Asked about that, Young said he could have used better words. He said their chemistry should have been better for the rest of the team.

“It goes back to communication. Our chemistry should’ve been a little bit better … That’s why the season kind of finished like it was,” Young said.

As for Adams choosing Fisher over Young, the quarterback said he didn’t have the slightest idea why.

“It’s a business decision he had to make for his organization, which I’m OK with, and I think it’ll be the best for both of us. Me starting off fresh, getting a chance to play for someone else. To be a starting quarterback, that’s what my focus is on right now,” Young said.

I don't know about you guys, but I wouldn't mind seeing Vince Young in Carolina(if the Titans release him on Feb. 7th) with a new attitude, a fresh start, and a deep desire to prove his haters wrong. There's no doubt he can outplay any QB we got on the team by a damn mile and the guy is still fairly young(27). Is he Elite? No. But he is definitely an explosive QB at times that may just need a fresh start and a young team to gel with.

Sh!t, imagine snagging Young and taking A.J. Green with the first overall. Let those 2 develop some chemistry together on and off the field and your talking about a seriously deadly QB/WR combo right there! Not to mention it'd probably cool Smitty off to have a decent QB throwing him balls again.

Anyways, I know it'd be a pretty big gamble (hell, what in the NFL isn't???) but I hope JR, Hurney, Rivera, and Chud will at least consider the offensive possibilities that the aforementioned scenario would create. If they don't, then f*ck ittttttt!!!!

I don't really want him to be honest, seems like there are too many character questions about him. If he was to come out real strong in an interview and the FO picked him up I'd support him but I just don't see that happening. He's looking for a place to make his long-term home, too, and I don't know we are after that from FAs. I do not think they will be trying to get a franchise QB in FA. Could be wrong though.

We've already had a Kerry Collins walk out on the Panthers organization.

We don't need another quitter.

I can respect all that, but damn if he just fell in our hands, he could be a good fit for our young team (especially if we take Green #1 overall). He was on track to have his best year this season but only appeared in nine games(10 TD's 3 picks). Anyways I just got off of a 12 hour shift, so I'm probably just delirious. Carry on.

I dont know about Vince. Im the type of guy that will stick up for most of these players, and I believe in 2nd chances, but I dont know if he's ever gonna get "it". I was looking at the other Vince thread, and I agree with another poster in there that says he still seems very immature.

I'd give him a shot. Sign him to a 1-2 year deal, and see how he responds. He could finally get it, and be worth the risk. I feel the same about Haynesworth.

Vince Young won a games at Tennessee but I just don't see him being a championship level QB. I don't think the maturity is there...even though people were saying the same thing about Mike Vick before he exploded for the Eagles. If we could get him cheap and we paired him with a guy like Vincent Jackson via FA or AJ Green via the draft then I'd be for it. If all we are going to do is sign Young and then not surround him with any receiver talent then I'd rather just start completely over with a rookie. Either way...I don't see Jimmy Clausen or Matt Moore as the future of this franchise.

    • Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.   1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.  GRADE: C -    2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL GRADE: F   3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career. GRADE: F 4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick GRADE: C+   5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.  GRADE: F OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F
