Next up: Senior Bowl

It will be this Saturday on NFLN (not sure what time yet). Marty Hurney will be on hand.

Todd McShay listed some players to watch:

* Offensive tackle: There is still plenty of wiggle room on top of our board. Colorado's Nate Solder, Wisconsin's Gabe Carimi and Boston College's Anthony Castonzo are the top three senior prospects (the only underclassman in the mix is USC's Tyron Smith, who is No. 11 overall).

* Defensive end: Purdue's Ryan Kerrigan, Iowa's Adrian Clayborn and Miami's Allen Bailey can all get after the quarterback. All will be players to watch this week in Mobile.

* Boston College OLB Mark Herzlich: Herzlich's story is well known at this point. He was one of the top outside linebacker prospects in the country when doctors discovered a tumor in his leg and he missed the entire 2009 season. The courage and resiliency he showed in coming back is remarkable. Unfortunately, teams can't afford to draft based on emotion and he hasn't been the same player since he's returned to the field. If he can show the same kind of range and athleticism he showed in 2008 this week, his stock will benefit.

* Texas A&M DE/OLB Von Miller: Miller played a hybrid outside linebacker/defensive end role at Texas A&M and he projects best at outside linebacker. He has some experience dropping into zone coverage, but teams will want to see how well he opens his hips and matches up in man coverage drills. Miller should also wow scouts with his first-step quickness, body control and closing speed during one-on-one pass-rushing drills this week.

* Oregon State DT Stephen Paea: We don't question Paea's ability to play the run. At 6-foot-1, he has the low center of gravity to get under offensive linemen and the strength to hold his ground once he establishes position. The key for Paea will be showing he can get to the quarterback this week.

* Defensive tackles: In addition to Paea, keep an eye on Baylor's Phil Taylor, LSU's Drake Nevis and Clemson's Jarvis Jenkins when watching defensive tackles this week.

For those of you that have it, NFLN will be broadcasting the practices this week leading up to the game with Mayock and Charles Davis, two of the most knowledgeable guys in the game, especially draft-wise stuff...

They offer interesting insight into the players throughout the practice.

Speaking of Jake Locker, I'm really starting to change my mind about him. First play of 7 on 7s, as Mayock is talking about his issue being accuracy and no balls should hit the ground, Locker throws an INT. No pressure, simulated rush, nothing. Just throws a pick. 2nd throw he throws about 5 feets over the head of a checkdown in the middle of the field to the RB.

I'm watching the practices now.. love that Mayock is on there breaking everything down..

I wouldn't put much stock in today's practices, proudiddy.. the QBs don't have any rhythm with these receivers and they are all full of nerves today as it is...

I watched the 1st practice and I was very impressed by the two WR's from Boise State. The really fast one (I think his name was Titus Young) absolutely burned Kendric Burney (CB from UNC) in a 1 on 1 drill. That guy is going to be a big time playmaker in the NFL.

This is true but the Panthers will go BPA no matter the need.

I wish we'd stop this BPA crap. I think the Panthers should draft their biggest needs first then go BPA in the later rounds. Our biggest needs are obviously QB and DT and since there are no elite QB's at the top of this draft we should take the best elite DT which is Nick Fairley.

    • Let's be completely honest about this... Our WR room is AT and a bunch of question marks. Thielen is the only guy we know who knows the route tree completely, understands play calls and can regularly get open/beat close coverage when necessary. He's long in the tooth, isn't the speediest guy on the field but he plays like a pro, starting level wide receiver. Xavier, last season looked great at first, but man he kind of petered out down the stretch and would disappear in a number of games. He wasn't reliable on routes or getting open and where he was supposed to be a king at contested catches, he often looked a bit intimidated. I'm not saying he's a washout by any means. Anyone with his size, speed and catch radius could make it big in the NFL, but can he do it? He'll need to show more than he did in the preseason before we can really rely on him as a WR1 or WR2.  Coker was a revelation last season, he really played way above his (non)draft status and flashed multiple times in games and was a steady performer. What we need to find out, though, is whether he was benefiting from being an unknown that wasn't getting maximum effort from opposing DBs or if he was just outworking and outhustling everyone on the field. We should find out this season. We sure as hell didn't find out much in the pre-season (from him or any receiver or QB for that matter). He's still a question mark, but I think he has the look of the real deal. He might be this generation's next Thielen. Now, let's talk about Tet. High first round draft pick, first true WR off the board this year. Stellar career out west in college. Has the swagger of the WR1. And man, y'all are going to get mad about this but... he comes across as a mook. And in the pre-season he performed, well, not so great against poor opposition of second and third stringers. Yeah, he caught that one moonshot ball in the first game but really, nothing else lighting the place up. Rookie endzone drop in that game, too. He's still young and adjusting, I'm sure, but I was hoping to see something of a breakthrough kind of guy. I'm still looking. Hunter Renfro? Gosh, I hope he can make the team and make a comeback to his old form. It would be such a great story. But maybe neither one of those happens. We won't know until Tuesday and then, if he makes it past there it could be weeks. So, TL;DR: AT is all we can bank on right now. We couldn't afford to let him go considering the number of unknowns we'd be throwing out there for our QB, who himself is still an unknown. One thing to add: Our receivers coaching group has their work cut out for them. I hope they are up to the task, but the pre-season gave me little reason to believe in them. And I really need something to believe in here in Carolina.
    • Same I think Randsom is a baller..... hopefully we don't have to suffer through 4-8 games of Scott blowing azz to get him on the feild.
    • Linebacker is the biggest need - I hope we figure out a way to address it. Krys Barnes is the only one who even moderately flashed.  Super nervous about Trevin/Rozeboom as a duo (Still like Trevin) I'd be excited if we had a better vet to mentor Trevin.  Or a better younger guy to support Rozeboom.  They just don't fit well and it may be a big problem against the run, even with our DL much improved.
