It will suck so bad if this Blaine Gabbert kid turns out to be something special and we didn't take him cause he wasn't worthy of the #1 pick. I'm all for drafting Nick Fairley but man it sure would be nice to have a franchise QB.

Well that's just the thing. You never know which guy will actually live up to be that guy. And that even goes for a guy like Luck. It's a gamble. For all we know, 2 years down the road Clausen may just be that guy.

Franchise QB's are named that way because they stick with a franchise and become their guy over time. I highlighted the key term.

There's no such thing as a franchise QB in the NFL draft. Just rookies.

I disagree with that statement. Matt Ryan came in as a rookie and was the Falcons franchise QB from day 1.

Yeah exactly. This is another reason that I'm iffy on Clausen. I believe everyone should have a second chance, but the truth of the matter is that there's been a lot of first round QB's that have had success in their rookie years of late.

Some Wednesday notes:

MattBowen41 Matt Bowen

Talked with UNC DB Kendric Burney after practice. Said he had good meetings with Jets, Panthers down here in Mobile.

josephperson Joe Person

Washingto qb Jake Locker has talked to a lot of teams at the Sr. Bowl. The Panthers aren't one of them.

Carolina Panthers - They were talking to North Carolina safety Da'Norris Searcy for a VERY long time today, and he could be a favorite target of there in the middle rounds.

Also this from the same site:

...after Fairley had issues with academics in college, he looked to JaMarcus Russell for advice (somewhat ironically funny), and that the two still stay in touch and both still visit back home

true enough, but it just goes to show he isn't coming from nowhere like some people have thought.

if the hype about his skills is legit he's worth a top 5. it's not so easy to tell though based on film, so.

His film work is about avg IMO. What worries me is that he scored so few points in the spread. If I talk good about Gabbert, I have to talk good about Newton and lord knows what that will turn into.

one thing to know about that is that Missouri's playcalling heavily favored the running game near the goal line, to the point where they had one of the highest percentages of touchdowns scored by rushing in college football, despite having a relatively mediocre rushing attack. Gabbert himself scrambled for a number of touchdowns this year.

Really, his stats don't matter all that much, and they are strong in other areas... for instance, check out his pass attempts to INT ratio. At first, throwing 9 seems like quite a bit until you see how f'ing much they had him throwing the ball.

Not saying not to consider his stats, OR that his stats somehow indicate he should be taken high, just saying... they aren't quite so telling as they might first seem.
