Would you take Josh Freeman #1 overall?

funny thing is that was supposed to be Clausen's strength, too. It was the 20+ deep balls where his accuracy was questionable. he was supposed to be near perfect up to 20 yards.

Well now that we saw him in 10 starts, what is the verdict? Did Clausen throw the 10-20 yards outs and crossing routes well with good velocity and accuracy?? What about Freeman? How did they compare on those type of passes?

One thing that doubters aren't taking into consideration with Gabbert is that the kid got a top 20 rating from the scouts that advise underclassmen on their draft status. That was BEFORE Andrew Luck decided to stay. So Andrew Luck or no Andrew Luck...Gabbert was rated as a guy that was going to go in the top 20 picks.

McShay had him going 3rd in his last mock draft before the Orange bowl so there is no lack of support for Gabbert being a top pick in the draft. If we make Gabbert the #1 pick then I will be excited about it because it means that our scouts saw all of the intangibles necessary for him to be a franchise guy. I hope that is the case...

if they pick him, as with anyone, I'll be excited.. of course, I won't be if he turns out to be a flop.. but our scouting department knows more than anyone on this forum, regardless of what our ego tells us..

Just stop with the Gabbert bullpoo already. I would seriously rather have Jake Locker instead of Blaine Gabbert. Locker has at least put up good numbers in college (just not this year) while surrounded by garbage for teammates. That's something that can't be said about Gabbert.

I am not yet ready to call Freeman a franchise QB. Before we go crazy about his 2nd year, consider that he played against 6 teams with a winning record (Pitt, Bal, NOx2, Atlx2). TB went 1-5 in those games, with the only win coming in week 17 against the Saints, who had nothing to play for. His ratings in those games were 67.1, 79.5, 72.0, 67.6, 61.4 and 133.2 (NO last week of the season). My stance on him before the draft were that he seemed like a cupcake killer, as he seemed to tear it up against Montana St. but I couldnt find one single good game he played against a ranked team. A couple of decent games, then a bunch of forgettable performances. It appears that track record may be continuing in the NFL. Not to say he isn't a good QB, because I think he is, and of course he is better than what we have right now, but I would have taken him in the 2nd last year, and while he has outplayed that, I think he was drafted right where he value is.

    • To rub salt in the wound when you look back to what were considered some of the most underwhelming resulting seasons in Panthers history before the Tepper's came along we still managed a top 20 passing offense with journeyman Matt Moore and the ghost of Jake Delhomme in 2009. And Steve Smith was 44th in the league in YAC so it was not a chunk play pass offense. Obviously the run game was dominant with Jonathan Stewart and Deangelo Wiliams but comparatively the run game in 2009 only amassed 500 more rushing yards than the 2025 Panthers in a down year for Chuba Hubbard. It shows just how comically desperate we have become to adjust standards that actually used to mean something.
    • I wouldn't have picked up the option, to me he's that replaceable. I think the Panthers are taking a more cautious strategy, not ready to move on yet but also holding off on committing to him until the last possible time.  Basically, he's a competent NFL QB. He's bottom third in the league. That's actually not a terrible thing. You can win some with a bottom third QB. If over time he takes a few steps forward he might be a median level QB. I think those are the kinds of steps that Canales is talking about. If you've truly got a median level QB, it's probably worth keeping him as opposed to roll on the dice in the draft. But just to be super clear, I don't think he is capable of taking those steps, and I think we should and will move on after the season
    • Unfortunately this is more wishful thinking than anything. The problem is the bar is so low for what they consider success for Bryce Young. I mean we have yet to field even a top 25 passing offense with Bryce Young heading into his fourth season and it's basically considered a when not if we begin contract extension talks with him.
