Someone please tell me how to pick a franchise QB?

It seems like the so called experts get it right about 50% of the time.You have to think that someone in this draft will be a franchise qb.Who will it be and why?How does a guy like Matt Cassel never start an NFL game and get drafted by the patriots?Even his on college coach could not access his talent.

Ignoring the guys in front of Cassel????

Anyways, if Cassel had started an NFL game before the NFL draft, that would have been sumthin.

I'm not sold on Cassel as the next Tom Brady.

He didn't look so good in the playoff game, nor yesterday for that matter.

I am not advocating that but i find it curious that teams are so poor in evaluating talent at qb.For every top pick bust there seems to be a 6th or 7th round guy that ends up being a superstar

Starter? Yeah. Superstar? Other than Brady, not so much.

Yeah, Romo's undrafted, He's also overrated, and his "star power' owes a lot to the star on his helmet.

intangibles are key (intelligence/football IQ, poise under pressure, decision making skills, leadership, ability to hype the players, work ethic, will to win/fight, mental toughness, coachability)

ability to read a defense

footwork

good passer (efficient, accurate, quick, good completion %, and the ability to make all the throws)

ability to read the field well (doesn't necessarily mean able to read defenses, but it helps)

can work through progressions

can keep drives alive and extend plays (scramble in the pocket and buy time or run the ball himself when needed)

very positive win/loss record

yards per attempt/completion

performance in big games

fits the organization

keeps the ball safe, but still takes risks

fwiw, i think height and arm strength are two of the most overrated traits. they are somewhat important, like you can't have a midget with a noodle arm in there, but people place way too much value on these two and overlook the other things which is why you have guys like leaf and russell taken so early.

The Franchise must be 100% behind the guy first. Our o-line seem's to be missing something on the right side, Otah's injury hurt, but we need better depth there. Jimmy was thrown in the fire way too soon, with that line and rookie's all over the roster no wonder he played badly. Now I'am not here to call Clausen our "Franchise" QB, we need to pick up a Vet who can compete/mentor Jimmy and Tony or draft pick's. It take's time, and MONEY. And the money part is scary right now. I hope Herney give's Colin Kaepernick a passing thought, in time he could be something, and he might still be on the board in the 3rd round.

Pretty much.

In 2002, I picked up Drew Brees in a trade with a fellow Fantasy player, whom I was playing the following Sunday. I looked at some of his vids, looked at his stats... thought "he could be a winner", and started him. That weekend, he scored 5 or 6 TDs, and I handed my opponent an ass-whipping.

But in 2003, he went 1-7. The Chargers benched him... get this... for Doug Flutie. Read that again... Doug... Flutie... replaced Drew Brees as the starter for the Chargers in 2003.

Now Brees is not only a Franchise QB for a division rival, but a contender for the HoF IMHO. But could anyone have ever guessed that this would have happened? San Diego drafted him with the 33rd pick, 1st pick in the 2nd round. Clearly they didn't put a tremendous amount of stock in him.

This is why I only give a modicum of credit to Scouting Reports and draft projections. It's guesswork influenced by media hype and ego. Unless someone is clearly trying out for the NFL that has no business to, any given player in the draft can become a Franchise level player.

      It’ll be interesting to see how the board falls I completely agree with you on TE for us The safety from Oregon would be the cherry on top for Evero’s defense/scheme.  If a OL’men is there that you love it would be very hard to pass up. This fan base seems to just see Walker as a stop gap but I wouldn’t be so sure. He’s the same age as Ekwonu. He’s had a much more impressive career arc/progression than Icky has. He’s the better pass protector. As far as I see it if Walker has a good year I’d bring him back over Icky. Ekwonu isn’t some elite franchise LT. Playing next to Lewis is going to be great for Walker much like it has been for Icky. We definitely need to get younger/cheaper on the OL though so for this reason alone it’s still top of my list come round 1 if board falls this way  Could also use another corner with Mike Jackson’s deal up after this season and needing a nickel but Corey Thornton looked really good in that role in the limited time we got to see him. However he’s coming off an achillies injury and you never know with those.  Then as mentioned above we do still have a need at WR. As far as “weapons” go it’s kind of a 2 man show with Tmac and Coker and neither is a burner. If Jordan Tyson is there at 19 and we can have a young WR group locked up for cheap that’s a huge advantage cap wise  And don’t forget linebacker. That clip in Devin’s Lloyd blueprint they used from Evero saying they need more intelligence there could’ve been left out for Wallace’s sake but it’s true. Wallace is lost in coverage. Pair a smart linebacker with Lloyd and that’s a group with Wallace and Cherelus being depth

      Not always. LT was for the Giants. So was Ray Lewis. Von Miller was moreso than Manning his final year in the season that shall not be named. It's usually the QB, but not always.
