I now 100% endorse Cam Newton for the #1 pick

My cousin was talking with Sal Sunseri (former Panthers defensive line coach from 2002-2008, current Alabama linebackers coach, SI's 2011 recruiter of the year) and he said that Cam Newton is the best football player he's ever seen. He was more worried about him than he was worried about Michael Vick when Vick was shredding the Panthers for that stretch of time.

I already had Cam Newton and AJ Green right there for who I wanted at #1, but this solidified it for me. So long as he has a great combine as expected, the list of reasons why we should pick someone else over Newton at #1 will diminish to basically zero. He has the potential to be a franchise-saving player that's going to be like a defibrillator for everyone: front office, team, fans, etc.

So anyway, I put a lot of stock into what Sal Sunseri says. He's seen the best and has no reason to prop someone from Auburn of all places, especially not to my cousin.

I'm also joining you in hoping that we use our #1 overall pick on Green or Newton. I think they're both special players, and either one of them will be dominating in our uniform for a long time. I wont be upset with Green or Newton. Cam being the face of our franchise is something that really intrigues me, though. He'd bring a new excitement(not to mention more fans) to the Carolinas. I haven't bought a jersey in years. Lol, I can honestly say if we drafted Cam, I'd order a Newton jersey as soon as they were available if he came here

Welcome aboard the Newton train. I hope you will help us in this constant battle that goes on everyday with some of the knuckleheads around here. We need all the help we can get.

The best football player he has ever seen? Considering he has first hand experience of some of the all time greats (Manning, Brady etc) I have a sneaking suspicion that this comment has been blown out of proportion.

You can't compare any college player to one of the NFL greats before they take a snap in the NFL.

However, I am not surprised you have decided to make a sweeping statement, you never make these kind of predictions

I took it in terms of having to gameplan for but YMMV.

    • He'd be a huge upgrade for this year, but we're still not going to be contenders with him and I'd rather keep the cap space to roll into next season to spend on a younger player who can be an impact starter for us for the next 3-5 years while we're hoping to contend.
    • Because playoff hockey and regular season hockey aren’t the same thing.  It’s a combination of the game intensity being dialed up with loose officiating.
    • The last 8 weeks, Nix had 2,022 yards, 21 TDs, 6 INTs on 70% completions While Bryce's last 8 games he had 1,709 yards, 12 TDs (albeit adding 5 more rushing), 3 INTs on 61% completions. I'm not going to pretend I watched those Broncos games to know exactly how Nix actually looked, but in retrospect, his statistics were better.  Hell, in just his final 8 games, Nix had only 5 less TD passes than Bryce has in his 30 game (28 starts) career. And you said he had better WRs than Bryce did, but I'm not even sure that's even true either. Sutton and Thielen might be completely different types of WRs, but I'd say they are pretty equal on effectiveness if not even a slight edge to Thielen (63.6 YPG for Sutton to 61.5 for Thielen).  Then XL and Coker vs Marvin Mims and Devaughn Vale, again, at worst a push, if not lean in our favor there too. Why is it so hard for some Panthers fans to just objectively look at our team/Bryce and be honest with themselves. ? He was significantly improved the final two months of the season from his first season and a half.  But he was still a below average QB during that time, even if he had a few good throws and clutch moments.
