Kalil is first proof that Jerry will not be cheap after lockout.

J. Joseph would be my first choice, though I expect he would be asking for similar if not more cash than Marshall but would be an upgrade.

he would be worth that money. i just seen champ and ronde have signed new contracts i thought you could not sign anyone now until the cba was done. or is jerry waiting?

sometimes lineman... when you think about the things that matter in life... it all becomes clear.

get back to me on that.

Back to me: Other teams are resigning cheap veterans to short term deals, who on our team is a veteran and in need of an extension? No one. Also the new CBA will probably have a week long window to resign the teams own free agents, then free agency will start. Then training camp will start for one week, then regular season games. That's if it gets done in September, which IT WILL if it isn't reached by March 3rd, because no player is in a hurry to play in OTA's or training camp.

Yeah jerry said he would wait until the CBA is done, teams can resign their own players under the current CBA (I think)

There is no "current CBA", but yes teams can re-sign their own players right now. However, it is a bit of a conundrum for the Panthers FO to do so right now.

First, one of the rules of not having a CBA states that a team can only increase a players salary that is signed without a CBA by 30% per year. The problem with that for the Panthers is that all of the guys that they would want to give new contracts too are on still playing on rookie deals.

So, if Player A is making $500,000 base salary this year, then he could make no more than $650,000 base salary next year. The next year, he could make not much more than $780,000 base, and so on. Say Player A is looking for a 5 yr $35 million deal, to get him that deal you would have to give him a $30+ million dollar signing bonus.

This makes the contract front loaded all to hell and not very appealing to a FO. In 3-4 years when Player A is one of the top 5 players at his postion and is only bringing in a million dollars for the year he is not going to be a happy player.

So, yeah, you can sign your own guys to new deals now. However, with all of our guys on rookie deals with low base salaries it makes it a bit harder. It is just not fiscally responsible for the FO to hand out a combined $100+ million in guaranteed money to Beason, Williams, Johnson, Kalil, Anderson, and Marshall.

The bold is false, and the rest is funny.

Thought the CBA expired March 3rd, which would make it the current one until then.

All around the globe, people have been bagging on Jerry Richardson this year for being cheap owner since he was preparing for a lockout. I and a few others knew that he had a track record of spending big bucks to win, and so what if he learned through trial and error you get more from mediocre free agents at modest prices then big name free agents at blockbuster prices.

Well, here is the first evidence, and probably more telling than anything else we will see even for the rest of the offseason. Jerry will be willing to pay after the CBA talks are concluded based on the fact that he is one of about the ONLY owner that allowed the franchise tag to be used on a center. Granted of the three Kalil was the most pressing, and most necessary. I don't feel like searching right now, but I'm sure this is one of the few times in league history the franchise tag has been used on an offensive lineman that wasn't a tackle. The reason? Because it costs the same amount of money to franchise a center or guard as it does to franchise tag the best left offensive tackle. Remember, left tackles get paid loads of money to protect the QB's blindside.

The fact that Jerry greenlighted such an unusual move indicates his desire to fund a winning product on the field regardless of NFL norms or opposing opinions.

I don't think it means anything beyond the fact that the Panthers franchised their Pro Bowl center. Seems pretty logical to me given the other options.

    • Lol, good one. Rod will never let Necas Play center
    • All I can say is... I have some happiness off the rags choking and losing to the Panthers. Hopefully the Western conference team wins the Stanley cup, but now I can be 100% uninvested in the playoffs
