"This year" is a bit misleading with how cap hits in contracts work.

Looking at average per year contract value, Hamilton is #1 and while technically having a higher run grade, I mean c'mon...

Kerby Joseph is #2

Antoine Winfield Jr. is #3. LOL @ the Bucs

Bro it’s not misleading you just interpreted it how you wanted to try to make a point. The top 4 FA safeties this year match what I said in my original post. They aren’t coverage guys.

Cause the league is swinging back to being a run first league.

Yes I know. Most people know that. But because the Panthers signed him certain posters want to make it seem like we threw money down the drain even though that’s literally the type of guys that got paid this free agency at the position.

Yeah, it's misleading just using the cap hit THIS year based on how NFL contracts work in terms of moving cap hits around for convenience. Dak Prescott is the highest paid player in the NFL this year. Is that indicative of anything other than Jerry Jones being an idiot? Taylor Moton is the highest paid OT this year. Is that indicative of anything other than the Panthers being morons?

Nobody brought up cap hits. Literally wasn’t even part of the discussion.

So how are you determining who is the highest paid THIS year?

I truly do not understand why you keep going back to cap/paid/money. It literally was never part of the original discussion I brought up. The top 5 FA safeties going into this offseason was pretty well agreed upon with a consensus. I guess because you aren't familiar with them and are only going off of cap numbers, if you need a source, here's one (btw Kyle Hamilton was not a FA) https://www.nfl.com/news/top-101-nfl-free-agents-of-2025-ranked-by-position-which-spots-have-most-least-depth

My bad, I read your initial post as highest paid.

I hope I'm wrong about Moehrig but I never understood backing up the Brinks truck for him. He's the type of safety you can generally grab for pretty cheap and lo and behold here's a better version of Moehrig available on the trash heap on the eve of the season.

Just like we overpaid for Wharton.

I’m not mad at Moehrig.  He’s great at what he does.  And to be honest, a lot of my favorite safeties in our history were box-first type guys - Maxie, Minter, Mike Mitchell, Chris Harris…  they’re first and foremost objective was to put people on their backs and coverage was secondary.  There is a place for that.  There is a definite need for that.  Physical guys that set the tone.  So cool, we have that in Moerhig.

But what we have lacked for the vast majority of our existence is a true free safety that cleans everything up on the back end.  Sometimes they come in the form of a JOAT, like Peppers.  I think he would be a fantastic compliment to Moehrig’s strengths and weaknesses.  If we don’t go after him, I certainly hope Ransom is given the chance to grow and develop in real-time with real game reps, because what he did in preseason was very encouraging to see.  I hope he can grow into that roaming center fielder with a little bit of an edge to him as an enforcer as well.  He has the tools.  In the meantime, adding Peppers would only help.

    • Option 1 is most likely. Even if he kills it this year, it wouldn't be prudent to rush an extension for one good season. If you have to pay him more because you waited another year, then he earned it. And that's OK. Adjust accordingly.
    • Cam had the advantage of having a very strong supporting cast his first 2 seasons. Things definitely worsened later on. But those first couple of years can kill a QB. Some never truly recover. If they do recover it takes years, and usually with another team. Trying to learn to be an NFL QB with TEs and WRs that are trying to learn too is a recipe for disaster. Imagine if Cam's rookie season was that 2014 offensive squad. Changes everything! I said it when they moved up in 2023. This team wasn't ready for a rookie QB yet. Anyone that thinks Stroud would have been a lot better is delusional. The correct formula is to build a strong team and then you go get your rookie QB. Not the other way around. BY is going into his third season and we're still trying to put a respectable group of WRs and TEs around him. I think they have the right personnel now. Unfortunately they haven't developed into actual NFL players yet.  This season we should expect consistency and aggressiveness from BY. Mostly for his development but also to DEVELOP his young cast.
