4th and 1 Throwaway

Recommended Posts

The gameplan was terrible and I think they fugged him mentally instead of doing what worked to get him in a comfort zone like he was the end of last year. It was clear they were playing not to lose the game instead of win the game and Canales was much too intent on forcing the run game instead of getting the offense in a groove. You could see it from the start: take the play clock down, run the ball, shorten the game, throw on 3rd down when you have to. But you can’t go a whole game relying on converting 3rd downs 6 times per drive or whatever. Every single first down took 3 full downs. I remember the first time we actually got a run for a first down, on first down (the Rico Dowdle run) the refs gave us a terrible spot and made it a 2nd and 1 instead, and then we snap the ball again at 0 and run the most predictable run play in the history of mankind and lose 2 yards now we’re back to a 3rd and 3 or 4 or whatever it was at that point. It’s not sustainable. He’s so concerned about protecting the ball but doesn’t seem to realize we’ll never win the turnover battle because we have a defense that doesn’t generate turnovers and an offense that doesn’t keep the defense honest. A knee to go into half time down 17 with 1 second on the clock? Come the fug on. That crap mentality has infected this team. The Jags went for it on 4th and 1 from their own 40 on the first possession of the game and it set the tone for the rest of the game. Why did they go back to what clearly didn’t work with Bryce and abandon what worked at the end of last season. Stop trying to force poo and play the game that’s in front of you.

That moment happened a long time ago.

And as far as Jamarcus Russell or Ryan Leaf goes. At least they had the decency to be horrendous and just quit so everyone could move on. Imagine three years of either of those two.

Ngl, I watched Jamarcus closely, because if he could put it all together, he was a fuging specimen.  And even him not giving a poo and not trying, he was still 1000x more enjoyable to watch and more competitive than Bryce.  Most of that is because he had the physical tools.  Bryce does not, which makes it damn near unbearable to watch week after week.

Or we play that way because their hands are tied as to what they can call and when because depending on the style of defense, they know Bryce can’t do what they need.  And I get the sentiment of formulating a game plan to your strengths and weaknesses.  But it is inherently disadvantageous to have a QB who so desperately needs a game plan tailored to him to succeed, versus having a QB with enough requisite skill and ability that they can adapt to your scheme.  We are so limited offensively because Bryce is limited physically.  And we can’t win the turnover battle because even when Bryce adlibs he turns it over.  Something as simple as a scramble - that’s improvised, it wasn’t drawn up.  He chose to do that,  then goofily stumbles into the defender because he can’t even make a decision to choose a path, make a move and go, and as a result, gets sized up and the ball punched out like taking candy from a baby - literally.  I guarantee you, Bryce could go play for Andy Reid and would still look like poo.  It’s not the scheme.  He fuging sucks.  I also guarantee, Andy Reid would never even sign Bryce lol.

That’s my point, he was playing like an indecisive, timid little mouse because the game plan was to not lose the game. The coaches said to the team we’re scared so we’re going to shorten the game and play not to lose. Last year when they had nothing to lose they got him playing loose and they weren’t forcing a timid philosophy. He looked really good improvising after he came back last year. Not today. I don’t think that run the play clock to zero, get your offense down the field 3yds at a time, gameplan came from the QB, I think it came from Canales. I thought before today that maybe even if the season didn’t work out that Canales might still be a good head coach for the future, I’m not so sure now.

To me that gameplan was basically the AZ gameplan and others we saw post benching.   Issue is Bryce can get in the way.  From the jump it was clear it was a standard minimize Bryce day…..but he he still has to pass the ball.

Reminds me of high school football years ago when this team was driving at the end of the game, his coach was basically screaming the play across the field because time was running out but the kid thought he was being smart and spiked it…. On 4th down.

Now, that is throw i could see Bryce making!

It came from Canales because Bryce is his QB.

When all you've got is a, er, uh, hammer...
