Mayock on Gabbert

Opinions of NFL experts: (not reporters--people who know how to evaluate talent because they have experience doing so.) Without looking, I will estimate that for every 1 you find that say the Panthers should take Newton, you will find 3-5 who say the risk is too big)

MS explain this to me as well. You talk about the people who "know how to evaluate talent"

The how do you account for the at least six teams that have him number one overall. Not best QB. Best player.

Do those guys not know how to evaluate talent???? Would you feel more comfortable if they are on the NFL network instead of NFL front offices???

The way I see the Newton situation is like this:

He is in fact a huge risk, there is no denying that. However, he also has the potential to become something the league has never seen before. He has the size of a TE, the field vision of a RB, an elite arm, and well documented "on-the-field" leadership skills.

So yes if Carolina takes Newton there is a huge risk that he is a bust, however if they do not take him there is a huge risk that they pass up a player that revolutionizes the position.

I also feel people are underestimating the rookie pay scale, assuming there will be one. A number 1 QB bust would hurt, but it would set the franchise back 5 years like it would without the scale.

As much as it may sound like it I am not a huge Cam Newton supporter, but I am also not against him. I just sure hope our stuff does their due diligence and makes the correct choice.

colorado i will try to find that game, but CU is terrible. i watched the iowa game and he looked decent at times but boy when the pressure got to him he looked like a different qb.

You could also watch him against Texas A&M and Oklahoma.

Against Colorado he didn't play the whole game. I just picked it out because one of the plays I was thinking of was in the clip in the OP.

btw, I should say I don't expect or really want Gabbert to go #1 overall. I have far fewer questions about him than I do Cam Newton, though.

I honestly don't know what I'd do, but I am liking AJ Green the more I look into him honestly.

But I understand how unlikely it is for us to take a receiver first overall...

Yeah but when you watch the Nebraska game and Texas Tech game he looks like he shouldn't even be starting at Mizzou let alone the first QB in the draft.

But then you see him in the first half of Iowa and he looks like a world beater.

Can't get a handle on this guy.

I have only seen about 5 of his games from this past season. But two of those are TTech and Nebraska.

That is probably why I am not that high on him, lol.

If you watch the segment on Gabbert by Mayock you see why he's so high on him. He understands the position, he can read the D presnap, knows how to manipulate coverage and has the big arm.

Only concern is footwork coming from a spread.

I find it amazing that Gabbert is being hyped so much given that all the draft experts in this thread think he's awful.

Wait...they're not draft experts? :sosp:

I've stated repeatedly that I've got no more interest in Gabbert than I do any other QB, but if you listened to guys here you'd think he was the worst QB in the college ranks.

Obviously, the people who make these decisions for a living have a slightly higher opinion.

It's not like it's hard to pick out 3 plays that make any decent player look good. Mayock even admits that 75% of Gabbert's passes were pretty much predetermined before the snap, and his highlights back that up.

Don't get me wrong though...if the Panthers like Gabbert more, then they should take him, but Mayock is clearly biased on this one.

And what is Mayock's bias based on?

I disagree, Mayock has watched numerous games and picked 3 plays to demonstrate what Gabbert does well. Again, Mayock has a wealth of knowledge, connections and resources we simply don't have.

Wasnt Jimmy Clausen ranked pretty high last year in the eyes of Mike Mayock?

Just saying...

*stirring the pizzot*

yep, and this is why im iffy on what he says about qbs. those draft experts all choose their guys. mayock is not sold on cam but likes gabbert. while brandt is sold on cam but not really gabbert.

Jimmy Clausen, David Carr, Joey Harrington, Akili Smith, Tim Couch, JaMarcus Russell and many more have all been rated highly by various draft experts. Not to mention also by the NFL personnel men who picked them.

(not to mention by plenty of fans)

It's the single hardest position to predict pro success in.
