Cox and Lea excellent panthers playbook podcast Canales and Young

Recommended Posts

my brief summation.
1. Who is it that was lackadaisical?  Was it Young  Ickey was referring to

2.  Canales continues to say the ‘me to connection ; ie qb to receivers is failing

3.  Young a great guy but not right as starter for the panthers   However, after 2.5 years,  too much bad play and too much inconsistency with a stable coaching staff and weapons References Mark Schlerth’s  comments… Young  couldn’t complete passes downfield

4. Mentions failures with Young due to Tepper in 2023  possibly did damage to Young    Maybe young needs a fresh start   So do the Panthers    wants to see Canales getting a 3rd year with his chosen QB   Cox counters, Maye had a bad situation in his rookie year but excelled this year

5. Discussed Young’s data on metric of ‘catchable pass rate’  the metric shows

         A.   Young fails on catchable passes other than 0 to 9 yards

          B.  McMillan is most effective 10 to 19  as one example, of WRs not being allowed to be at their best yardage

C     all 22 shows Legette is open a lot and ignored

6. Lea discusses the impact of losing Thielen on Young I.e. given young’s comfort with short passes, young misses Thielen   Young is starting to replace Adam with Jatevon  Sanders and he makes the decision before the snap to go to him regardless

4. Is still some massive BS. If you can't get over a clusterfug then you can't get over pressure from the play before. It doesn't pass the sniff test with Young as more than an empty excuse. A fresh start doesn't fix his true issues and even putting him with a real QB guru isn't going to raise his ceiling even if they can squeeze a slight improvement in production.

Yeah, I don't think a fresh start can help Young because his issue is that he simply doesn't have the physical tools. This isn't a  Baker or Darnold or Daniel Jones. Those guys always had the physical ability to play they were just in bad situations and landed in better situations that were able to maximize what they had to offer rather than dragging down a guy with abilities. Yeah, flaws as well but definitely physical ability. You can't coach Bryce into being able to see over the line or rifle a ball into a tight window or stretch the field. It's about physical limitations with Bryce and situation or coaching can't fix that.

He looks the same to me as he did in 2023.  Generally.  Meaning he is maxed out.

The stat about 10-19 shows it is worse than I even thought.

Some people won’t listen to anon from a message board but the radio and TV people saying the same stuff gets more people open to the idea that isn’t everything but Bryce like they have been clinging to these past seasons.

So maybe there will be a lot more support for making a change.

Yeah people say design an offense around him. So what would that really look like? He is okay at 1st and goal distances, so that is where you focus your attack? That can’t work.
It cannot work without throwing down the field, and who is gonna do that for him?

I’ve been saying this about XL.  Again, it’s unfair to judge any of these WRs or TEs as long as Bryce is QB.  XL could easily have the numbers Tet has right now or close to it, and Tet should have about 25 more receptions himself, if they had a fuging legitimate QB.  If I was a WR I would be pissed tf off with this whole organization…  well, I’d feel that way at any position, but especially WR.  Not only are you limiting our success as a team, but you’re making me look bad at my job in the process and hurting my potential to get paid what I deserve.  They need to sit Bryce tf down.

It looks like this season. That's basically what we've done. Bryce had three good halves. He played well against the Cowboys who are one of the worst defenses in the league and he played well in the second half against the Cardinals when they were playing bend but don't break protecting a sizable lead. That's it. The rest has basically been trash.

Pretty sure he's choked in the red zone numerous times the last couple weeks after Rico did all the work to get them down there lol. So the sub 20 yard stuff not really working either

Bingo. There's been no real improvements. He just is who he is. That was the concern even his backers had going into the draft - that he might be about as good as he's going to get, yeH he's super NFL ready but they even admitted that his ceiling was pretty limited for a top draft prospect. It's just that everyone - myself included even as a detractor - significantly underestimated just how limited he was going to be on an NFL field. I thought if all went well and he could hold up to the hits at his size he could be a mid-tier starting NFL QB. I was wrong even in not wanting him and being labeled a hater in the pre-draft process. I still let the media allow me to convince me my eyes were lying to me and that he's not as limited as he certainly looks to be to my eyes.

People think "arm strength" = throwing the ball down the field but it's also needed in the redzone where the windows get tighter and sometimes you just gotta be able to fire a laser in there.

Any of the WRs should look better with better QB play. XL has some issues not tied to QB play that is evident so even with better production from better QB play there is plenty to be concerned about with XL. For me his improvement doesn't seem to be an issue with him and he doesn't even appear to be working on it vs what Ickey did year 1 to year 2 to year 3. Not saying it can't happen but finding a new QB isn't magically going to address all of XL's issues.

Not everyone. I was and still am vocal about how little physical talent was on his school film. A couple of other posters were too but it was less than 5 here. He looked like a guy who peaked in school and should never have been a first round pick.

Not throwing at the combine, carrying 20 pounds of water weight, his deep ball looked like ass at his pro day, it was all there...
