Steelers are a stable organization and I don't think any coach they choose to hire will "destroy them." Also Tomlin stepped down for a media job, didn't get fired.

Don't underestimate how a bad hire can flip that on it's head.

IMO, this was a mutual parting of ways because he likely would have been canned otherwise.

Also, I am willing to bet his media job lasts until a good HC opportunity presents itself.

As respected as he is, I am not sure a defensive guy can thrive unless he can find himself a QB. Which he has not been able to do for quite a while. So he needs a job that has one in place.

Green Bay might have been a good place for him if it had opened.  I wonder if Buffalo is tired of McD, if that might not be a good place for him too.

I'm not Evero's No. 1 fan, but this place has a storied history of celebrating people leaving, then those people go out and perform better than they did here (sometimes beating this team along the way). We'll see what happens. I'd be a bit surprised if he got a HC gig but there's also a history of teams making head-scratching hires in that role. Thankfully, Tepper's not one of them.

Green Bay may very well open up after next season.

I agree, I think he will likely choose a spot with a settled QB situation. He thrived with that in Pittsburgh but he had to scrap hard to make do with the parade of misfit QB's since Roethlisberger retired.

My point is they are not going to make a bad hire, in all likelihood. Evero may or may not be a serious candidate for them. Like it or not, many teams interview certain coaches to check the rooney rule box. But if he is a serious candidate and they do hire him it means there's something there we probably don't see. I HATE Evero's scheme and playcalling decisions, but that doesn't mean he couldn't be a good/great HC. They are ultimately 2 different jobs, especially if as HC he let his DC call the plays.

Maybe you're right about Tomlin but I don't get that vibe personally. I doubt they'd have fired him this year, maybe he saw writing on the wall for the following year but based on comments from Steelers ownership I think they were happy with him having them competitive every year, even with the playoff losing. I mean all Tomlin really needed to break through in the playoffs IMO was a QB. Harbaugh got fired (mutual*) because they couldn't break through again despite having a probably future HoF QB and multiple time MVP.

I think Tomlin wanted a break and a change himself. I think he'll go back to coaching in a year or 2, but isn't waiting for the right opportunity just actually wants a break and a less stressful media job for now to kinda reset. Also wonder if he was getting frustrated at how the Steelers' FO kept approaching the QB position recently.

Like who? We have had far more leave and not pan out than vice versa.

It's gonna be an interesting one to see that search. One has to assume they will go young coach again. Likely defensive, so Minter, Weaver, Evero all fit that mold.

It could be that Evero is a better HC than he is a DC but I question how someone who seems so poor at talent evaluation and has a very flawed defensive strategy will excel at that.

Hey, hopefully we find out. I know it could certainly get worse on that side of the ball for us but I suppose luckily it can't actually get that much worse than being dead last and below average.

As many changes as we can make to our coaching staff, all the better.

I honestly think he would be a better head coach than coordinator. Good leader, a lot of experience, I think he's earned the opportunity to lead a team.

Serious question. If by some chance Evero leaves, does anyone have any clues whether Morgan and Canales would hire a D.C. based on his preference for the 3-4 defense? Would they hire someone who would want to use the traditional 4 man front?

I think Tepper forced Rivera into a 3-4 when he took over, can't really tell how much influence he's pushing nowadays since he's layed low the last couple years

I think we will know. Neither Dan nor Dave came from heavy 3-4 defenses in their background.

If we go 3-4 defensive coordinator again, I believe you have your answer.

I think wherever  Mike McCarthy goes, Jonathan Cooley goes. Capers was McCarthys coordinator for 9 seasons. None of his other DCs ever really worked out except Quinn who is in Washington now. McCarthy can’t have Evero but he can get his understudy.

That would still be a 3rd round pick this year
