How Does This Happen? Another Ref Mistake in our Game

It favored us.  Joe Person reported the Panthers coaches were aware but weren’t going to alert the officials since it favored us.

we kicked to the Rams with the ball placed at the 40.  The ball is supposed to be placed 5 yards back as all kickoffs are done at the 35.

The ESPN article is wrong.  This was not an official mistake.  Fitzgerald's kick was short of the landing zone, and placing the ball on the 40 was the correct call.

It was a mistake.  Fitzgerald kicked off from the wrong spot.  The mistake was where he initially was allowed to kickoff from….not where the Ram started their drive

Well don't I look like an idiot now, as I clearly see that in the article now.

Now I'm just hoping they had the article wrong originally and they updated it when they realized the mistake, as I swear it said the ball was placed at the 40 after the kickoff, but now I'm not so sure of course, lol

NFL officials are the most incompetent fools in all of sport.  They are ruining the game more and more with each passing season.  The NFL HAS to implement a real accountability policy.

1 - Hire them as full time employees.

2 - Implement accountability measures in exchange for full-time employment.

I actually very much disagree with the premise of this post about them being the most incompetent fools in sports.

The NFL is by far the hardest sport to referee in today's day and age.

There are 22 players on the field, but only 7 refs.  Even if you said there was a 1 v 1 matchup everywhere on the field, that's still 4 more matchups than refs, and they can only be looking at so many things at one time.

Then add in the speed that today's game is played at, and it's only getting faster and faster.  Players are able to do things that players a few decades ago wouldn't have even dreamt as possible.  There are WRs in today's game that are as big as OL from the 70's.

I'm not saying things can't be improved, but I think NFL refs get an unfair knock against them, and a big reason is today's technology advancements too.  Fans get the advantage of seeing replays from a dozen angles and slowed down to a frame by frame speed, and then get upset when the refs didn't call something that you can only see once you slow it down that way and see from multiple angles.

Like the play in the Bills game the other night, that was NOT a catch, the only reason some fans even think it was one, is because of super slow mo replay and to their eyes, it looks like he has the ball for a couple seconds, but they forget that in real time, that's really only about 0.2 seconds that he had possession of the ball, which is just not a catch.

I'd also bet if you had a way of playing a game from back in the day with today's technology, you'd find just as many mistakes being made by the refs, but the tech and number of cameras used back then just weren't able to capture it for people to realize after the fact.
