Being a Carolina Panthers fan is not as bad as it seems.

And I’m not referring to the wholesale changes that are on the way as Ron Rivera makes his mark. As hard as it may be to believe, there is some talent on that roster.

That talent extends beyond the the guys that we’re already familiar with. Everyone knows Jon Beason is a dynamic linebacker and that Jordan Gross is one of the best left tackles in the NFC. We’re even starting to see Ryan Kalil get some press as one of the best young centers in the game now that he has received the franchise tag.

But there’s another group on the rise. We’re looking at a quietly dangerous Charles Johnson, who generated more QB Disruptions than any other defensive end, and at an emerging playmaker in James Anderson, who finished 3rd overall in our 4-3 outside linebacker rankings. One more is an offensive lineman – who held down two positions ably – by the name of Geoff Schwartz.

Hang on. Geoff Schwartz?

A lineman from an offense that ran the ball inconsistently, and failed to keep its quarterback upright?

The very same.

A little background on the man out of Oregon, listed at 332 lbs. Drafted in the seventh round of the 2008 draft, Geoff got his first offensive action in Week 13 of the 2009 season … as an additional tight end – the stuff dreams are made of.

But fast forward a week, and with Jeff Otah knocked out for the year, the backup lineman became the starting right tackle for the last three weeks of the season.

He performed admirably in those starts, giving up just one sack and three pressures in 90 pass-blocking snaps. His run blocking, however, earned a grade of -3.0, failing to inspire much hope heading into the 2010 season.

Well that explains why we couldnt run the ball, no Otah and the dude playing guard cant runblock

did you read the full article? guess I should have posted a different portion lol. it goes on to say he improved in 2010.

ran the ball fine considering there was no threat of any passing attack the majority of the season.

I swear, nobody drafts OL like we do... now if we could just figure out how to draft a QB.

Makes me worry that a lot of that is because of Magazu(spelling might be wrong, old OL coach) and now he's gone :(

Ignorance is bliss.

I have been saying over and again, Schwartz was on a par with Kalil and Gross last year, we were just punished by the other two positions.

Schwartz is a good player. If we could just get Duke Robinson to step up it would really put a lot of worry about the line to rest.

I have very little confidence in the Duke. It would be a pleasant surprise if he comes into camp in great shape and ready to work, but I'm not counting on it. We need another guard as insurance, because Bernadeau was pretty bad last year too. At least Bernadeau has value as the back up center though.

      The OL has certainly been better than the trainwreck it was three or four years ago. As far as competitiveness let's apply some realism and clarity here. Quite a bit of the competitiveness in 2025 came from the defensive side of the ball which gave up the most points in league history the year before and was one of the bottom 5 units in terms of salary cap allocation for 2025 while the OL was top 3. We had the 26th passing offense last year. And if not for a herculean couple of games from Rico Dowdle we don't back our way into the division title or make the playoffs because we went 4-6 in our final ten games including being swept by the Saints who were starting a rookie 2nd round pick most of us mercilessly mocked when they selected him. In conclusion yes we've seen a difference. The question now is will the investment pay off the way we want. But the only way that happens is if we field a top 15 offense. If we can't even crack the top 20 then there need to be some very warm seats across the board. And I would hope just about anyone here should agree with that.

      These Spurs are lowkey loaded.  If healthy, they could win it all this year (#2 in the West right now). I still think we’ve gotta keep Kalk on Wemby; he’s not getting completely dominated like every other NBA center.

      Am I the only one who doesn't understand this fan bases infatuation with adding a high end TE? Especially when we have some bigger bodies in T-Mac and Coker who can slide into the slot at times and provide the big dependable target over the middle that most teams use their TE for. I mean, sure, it would be nice to have one of those elite TE's, but I feel like that's a position your better off going cheap with a committee who each bring something different to the table while spending our cap room on the more important positions. I like the potential we saw from Evans this year, Sanders could be a best if he can stay healthy, and Tremble has improved as well.  Just feels like spending high draft picks or cap space on other needs and more important positions is a better use of our resources than splashing on a TE in the draft or FA. Are those guys on the level of the Bowers or McBride's of the world?  Of course not, but we also are paying a fraction of the cost on our TE room than they are, and we're able to use that money for other needs.
