Beason: Cam For No.1, Has "It" Factor

Before we decide which dual threat quarterback played most every game during his career let list how many dual threat quarterbacks are 6-6 and 250 lbs and still run a 4.59 40.

Yeah there is one-Josh Freeman. So far he has started 25 straight games with no misses due to injury.

Size doesn't necessarily equate to durability though.

I watched Newton get up slowly a lot in the BCS game, and that was from hits by college players. Pro guys will hit him way harder than they did.

That's one of my red flags with him, especially so if he reverts to his tendency to run (something a lot of young guys do).

I would think a few runs up the middle resulting in a violent collision with a middle linebacker will remind him that there is a reason they allow quarterbacks to slide instead of take a hit in the NFL. It won't take him that many times before he figures it out. Most of the time guys take bigger hits while in the pocket particularly from their blind side when they are unprepared for the contact. He seems to be durable in that despite all the runs he didn't miss a snap all year.

If he is smart he will become a master of the slide and out of bounds dash if he wants to stick around for years.

So far Freeman has had 25 straight starts in the NFL with no injuries. Your point????

Correct. But it points out that he is not necessarily doomed to be injured just because he is a mobile QB. Many times injuries in the NFL are fluke occurences and luck of the draw.

I never said that Cam was doomed to be injured. I was simply highlighting the fact that dual threat QBs tend to not be very durable over the course of their careers. And you tried to refute that claim by pointing out someone who has not even been a starter for two seasons yet.

Well I think we all agree we don't want him carrying the ball 15 times a game. But he isn't a delicate flower either. He is 6'5 250 pounds as you guys have . Doesn't mean he is immune from injury but it does mean he is better equipped to absorb some hits.

And you pointed to Culpepper who missed 7 games over his first five seasons starting in the league. Which was less games than Jake missed in his first five years in the league starting for us. And he surely was not mobile and a dual threat. I could name you a plethera of other quarterbacks who were not dual threats who didn't last that long in the league either.

The point is that injuries happen to all quarterbacks at some point. Being a dual threat guy doesn't necessarily make it more likely or shorten your career quicker. Just as many guys have significant injuries from being sacked in the pocket as they do being hit while they are running.

I personally don't care what Beason, Davis, Tuck, Smith, Clausen, Moore, Williams, Stew, Gross or any other player has to say about who we should draft. They get paid to play football. Let's leave it to the guys the Panthers pay to scout to tell us who to draft.

*First four seasons starting, he sat his rookie year. BTW 7 games in 4 seasons = about 2 games a year he missed before he became "injury prone."

Also Jake completed 4 out of 7 seasons as a starter.

Yes you are right injuries happen to everyone.

Being a dual threat guy doesn't necessarily make it more likely or shorten your career quicker.

Maybe it doesn't, but every shred of evidence seems to point this way.

Just as many guys have significant injuries from being sacked in the pocket as they do being hit while they are running.

Actually, probably more have been hurt in the pocket, but that doesn't tell the whole story. Let's look at this past year for example... out of the 4 dual threat starting QBs in the league last year (Vick, Young, Freeman and Rodgers) 3 missed games do to injury. Out of the 28 or so other starting QBs probably about 8-10 missed games due to injuries.

So yes...

10 > 3

but...

3/4 > 10/28.
