but why keep settling for a game manager? to be considered an elite team we must have a good qb. or franchise qb.

Because having a big name or "good" QB puts pressure on us to stay competitive and win games. It also gives us an IDENTITY, something a lot of our fans DONT WANT. Not having an identity allows us to wallow in losing and still consider ourselves "likeable". We're "below the radar" so to speak. If we bring in someone highly rated and universally accepted as good, then we're not "below the radar". But if we put one of Jerry Richardson's nephews out there as our QB or some mediocre undrafted guy, the expectations lower, which makes our goal of losing easier to accomplish and easier to defend. LOWEST EXPECTATIONS POSSIBLE is the Carolina Panthers motto. Shoot for D+'s and hope for A's.

It'd be nice to have someone who was universally accepted as good, but unfortunately I don't see any player available at quarterback that fits that description.

On the other hand, I understand wanting to bring in a prospect with risk and see if they can learn and develop. In the mean time, we'll need someone at camp in case that prospect just doesn't pan out in the short term. Even if we don't go with a rookie, we need to add some depth to the QB position. Matt Moore is a decent free agent option; he may not be the future of the franchise, but every club needs a goodbackup. If that is all Matt Moore can be, and he's shown he is a quality backup in the past, then that's all he'll be... but I see no reason to cut ties with him right now when there is more than one quarterback spot on the roster.

As many have stated, Jake was our established QB whether you want to admit it or not. We can debate whether Jake deserved to be our QB, but Fox wasn't going to start anyone over a healthy Jake. That would make him an established QB.

having an established qb, and having a qb you can't rely on yet extend his contract and continue to put him out on the field despite his failings are two different things completely

a team with a normal coach would've reevaluated that whole position long before it got out of hand the way it did

TRD may be bias towards Moore but you're clearly the opposite.

maybe it's because Moore completely doesn't have what it takes to be a franchise QB. He's injury prone, he can't read the field well, he doesn't feel pressure well, he forces throws he shouldn't, and he's got barely any pocket presence.

I think considering the fact that we basically gave up next to zilch to get him made him a productive investment but a good backup is as good as he's gonna be, and that's all he's really proven to be. He's got a good arm but so does Hunter Cantwell, the problem is he doesn't really know what to do with it and probably never will.

Lets be real, he was a UDFA we picked up after he was cut from Dallas. He's 7-6 as a starter and two of those wins came against division rivals that had their seeding established by week 17. Another win against the Giants with one of the worst defenses in the league that year. Wow, what a resume. I think it's impressive for a guy nobody cared to spend a draft pick on, but for someone who can potentially give this franchise stability at the QB position for years? Nope.

Jake's problem is and was the elbow. His number's in 08 drop off due to it, but Dwill and Jstew picked up the slack. Sure Jake locked on to Smitty too often sometime's, can't say I would'nt lock on to the best WR on the team and in the NFL if I had half a chance. Before the injury he was solid, great at time's. After the injury is when Hurney should've drafted or picked up a QB. Matt had no real chance with the way thing's played out last season, he'll get a shot in camp if there is one.

If he's a good backup, why wouldn't you want to bring him to camp? What free agent backup do you have your eyes set on? He might even win the starting job this year if we draft a rookie or hell maybe he'd beat out Clausen and another vet. Either way, the worst that happens is we cut him because he doesn't make it through camp.

Very few of us think he's going to turn into an elite passer, but there's room in this league and on this team for the kind of player Moore is even if he's only a good backup. I don't expect him to win us a Super Bowl but I'd rather have him than many of the other FAs, that's all.

As to a rookie, just don't like the ones in this draft. Even if we did draft one, we're going to need a good backup.

Edit: I do think that Moore's career hasn't been long enough for us to know he couldn't be a good quarterback, but there's no way I'd build around him specifically with what happened last season. Still, no reason not to see how things turn out by bringing him to camp.
