Haven't seen this talked about but I was just reading an Darin Gantt article over at the observer that said there is a proposed rule change, that now kick offs will be done at the 35 and not the 30 and touchbacks will be at the 25 instead of the 20. Now I don't really understand the reason for the change IMO it won't prevent injuries or anything else so it's kind of pointless.

But if they do change the rule, do you think we might scrap the idea of having a kick off specialist and just let Kasay do all kick offs. I never thought Kasays leg was THAT bad and with the shortened distance I'm sure he'd be able to handle it and it would free up a roster spot for us to use.

No offense to any of the kickers, but I honestly hope the Panthers do away with the kick off specialist role. Seriously, would they have been any worse with out one last year? Did Rhys’s touch backs win them any more games? Also, how many game jerseys’ did one of our young players miss because of having a K.O. Specialist?

I understand why they did it (saving Kasay for scoring opportunities) and objectively, it probably helped just as much as a young guy who'd likely only play special teams anyway.

Still, there will come a time when we have only one kicker, and the departure of John Fox may hasten that time.

it prevents injury b/c it will greatly reduce the number of returned kicks. More balls in and out of the endzone....and if you opt to return one you gotta at least make it 5 more yards than before to make it worth it.

new era is here regardless. Bye bye Kasay. Hopefully, Kasay walks away and is ready to retire though.

Yeah, it's a sad moment. But it might be time to completely move on and Kasay is the last limb of the tree to be cut off.

Kicker has always been an interesting position. They can be the most insignificant player on a team the entire season but become the most important in an instant. Definitely a better to have and not need than need and not have position.

If it got passed it would also reduce the need for a kickoff return man as well given they will largely be catching them and downing the ball.

As for getting rid of Kasay, why would you do that at this point. He is money inside 50 yards. If you want to replace someone how about finding a punter who can kickoff as well. That would be easier than replacing Kasay I would think.

The silliness of it all is that they made rule changes a few years ago for the specific purpose of reducing the number of touchbacks in order to make the game more exciting.

Now we're trying to take it in the opposite direction, and all because everybody's scared that someone might get hurt playing football :rolleyes:

      That’s a grade I kind of expected tbh. I’m not a huge fan of NS, but he’s not as bad as what the huddle says he is minus the horrible game he had vs the Rams. I’ve always thought he’s often used as a scapegoat. The improved pass rush should hide his deficiencies a little bit better if he’s the game one starter. FS might have to be a position we punt on this year unless Thieneman falls to us at 19. The reality is, you're going to have a few average players in certain spots for a team with as many holes we had before free agency started. You can’t sign everyone.

      I am by no means trying to say he's a world beater. I'm saying it's trending in the right direction. Especially when measured against himself.i think the team feel the same way or else they wouldn't have picked up his option. Plus I think there is a new idea in the NFL about these young QBs. Teams give up to soon. Browns gave up to soon on baker same with the jets on Geno and darnold. Maybe they are who you thought they were in the draft process and they need more time to develop than you originally planned. Either way. I do think he is as capable as darnold is as far as you can win a championship with him. And something he does have that darnold doesn't is he is clutch.  If I need one more drive and 2 mins to go I'm betting on Bryce and I am far from a homer, just going off his game winning drives. He has that dog in him on the last drive.
