Newton, Mallett, and Gabbert given form of our playbook

hmmm...could be particularly important this offseason if a new CBA isn't reached before mini camp and OTAs. give the three a "test" to see how well they can absorb the playbook without any contact or instruction from coaches. now here's where i wonder if they can evade some of the rules during the lockout. apparently players can't have any contact with coaches during the lockout - this includes the delivery of any information such as a playbook. could you get around this by providing a full playbook to the player you intend to draft number one overall a few hours before you actually draft them? this could be the dumbest comment ever, i just honestly don't know...

I understand until they are actually drafted that they can have this type of interaction during the lockout

I have no idea what you're talking about.

Did I mention I don't want us to draft any quarterbacks this year?

I'll ask this to play devil's advocate:

What makes you not want to take a QB that would be as big of a risk as Pike? Which of course is barely any at all.

Give Pike some competition and maybe someone with alot of potential mid way down the QB board can take over 3rd string and try to work his way up. The new coaches are gonna try what they will to find their quarterback whether it be any part of the draft, through trade, or FA. They've said it and I assume they'll strongly consider one if we don't take a QB 1 overall.

We used two draft picks just last year on quarterbacks, three on receivers, and all of them are still on roster.

Mixed results on the bunch, but we've got a new staff and last year was a massive MCF, so it's tough to dump any of those guys with that as your only judging criteria.

Youth? that we've got. What we lack is leadership and experience. You don't get that in the draft. That's what free agents are for.

I don't like the idea of going to camp, much less another season, with that much youth.

There are other needs that this year's draft picks can be used on.

idk, I have my worries about Hurney picking quarterbacks. He is a good GM, but picking quarterbacks in the draft have been a major hurdle for him imo.

2001: Chris Weinke (former heisman)

2002: Randy Fasani (the 'future')

2005: Stefan LeFors

2010: Jimmy Clausen (golden arm) & Tony Pike (?)

But in short, he's been really hit or miss with QB's and him pulling the trigger worries me.

Hopefully Hurney has learned that shopping on the bargain racks isn't going to get him to the promised land.

Yes, and all those draft picks, no matter what the position, will add to the youth of the team.

I can't remember anyone on these forums say they wanted to roll with a draft pick, Clausen and Pike. Just about everyone recognizes the need for experience and leadership at the QB position, presumably through FA.

As to the draft, it's more a question of whether you want instant gratification (Dareus, PP) or whether it is best to sacrifice a bit of short term gain for greater future success, i.e. QB.

There are risks either way, but I don't agree with the reasoning that signing a FA QB means we should not take a QB in the draft as well.

I feel pretty confident that if we draft a QB we are going to try to go to camp with Newton/Gabbert/Mallett, Clausen, and Moore.

The reason being that even if Cam is a "project" than we would rather be in a situation where Matt Moore is only under contract until the end of the season so that we can let him walk at that time. If we sign a free agent it is going to be hard to get one in here for a short term contract like one or two years so he can just be a "mentor" and then move on. No legit QB will want to do that.

However, if we do pass on QB in the draft that changes the dynamics quite a bit. Then you can afford to extend a longer contract offer to a FA QB and opens up who you can go after. If you decide to go QB next year you will still have the vet under contract for only a year or two and you can use that time to mold your new young QB.

The only reason I am against the FA route is because FA are usually FA for a reason. They aren't any good. And I am not as convinced as others on this board that the future QB classes are any better than this one with the one exception of Andrew Luck.

And I am pretty dead set against any trade for any QB. Too damn expensive in draft picks.
