The Carolina Panthers' #1 Selection

That's all well and good, but we still have the same GM... who arguably has a huge hand in draft strategy. And Fox claimed that he had little imput on personnel.

So you trust what John Fox says in Denver but not our current staff...ok ;)

Considering we have a completely new staff & along with our GM who has an above avg draft track record imo, I am fine with trusting them. You choose to distrust them and remain mad about last year's draft, I remain chill about whatever may happen because I know there's no way in hell I know what's gonna go down.

Just because Fox's lame duck throw away season didn't create stars outta every draft pick doesn't mean they can't still do well.

I think Hurney has done a questionable job lately. 09 and 10, Carolina has not done a very good job imo.

Outside of the 1st round, Hurney overall hasn't impressed.

Yeah, I'll concede that point...but I think its because he's gotten trade friendly during drafts due to his success with the Stewart/Otah in the 1st round.

This year, its not likely because we can't trade next year's picks and additionally we are in position to gain picks if we trade the number 1 rather than losing any.

I believe we can have a 01, 02, or 06 type draft again or possibly even better. Wishful thinking: yes; unattainable: nope

I think Hurney was trying to save his friend's ass in John Fox.. which is why he kept mortaging our future for picks. He won't have the urge to trade future picks in this year's draft. Last year's draft was questionable, but we did find a potential star WR in Gettis at the end of the draft.. and anytime you come out of a draft with 2-3 starters, you did a very good job.

Let's also give Hurney a chance to draft without John "imsoconservativeidontdevelopyoungplayers" Fox. How was Hurney's last draft without Fox?

trading to nab armanti was hurney's baby.

:leaving:

Excellent point and Hurney averages over 2 starters in his tenure per draft. Here's easily over 20 at the top of my head:

Gamble, David Gettis, Peppers, Will Witherspoon, DeAngelo Williams, Otah, Gross, Jonathan Stewart, Captain Munn, Sherrod Martin, Godfrey, LaFell, Dan Connor, Beason, Kalil, Charles Johnson, Marshall, Thomas Davis, James Anderson, King, T-Wharton, Bernadeu...Pretty impressive over a 9 year period for a GM

wasn't Seifert the GM when Rucker, Smitty, Morgan, Jenkins, were drafted?

Per Panthers.com he assumed control in 02...so Rucker would be off the list (correct me if I'm missing anyone)

Smitty, Morgan, Jenkins, and Rucker were all drafted prior to 02.

They were drafted in 2001 and 1999. Seifert era.

    • They can get film of all the games? Every team? Wow! Who knew… Our games with them are big examples of why they are in  the CB market so hard.   It is the study they do getting ready for the games.  Preparing to play against is a little different than just analyzing film in scout mode. Deeper dive. Then you are analyzing post game too.  This goes to why players often change teams but stay in the division. The opponents know each other on a higher level.  Plus if you lost to us, you used to get fired. Now you have to trade your first round pick. Moving up on the world.
    • I honestly can’t believe this team’s turnaround this season. It’s surreal. Figured healthy we’d be fringe playoffs and with another lottery pick could finally turn the corner, but we don’t even need that. This group is ready. We haven’t played remotely well the last 5 games and yet still blew out 5 bad teams by 16+ each game like it was casual practice. We had a few solid teams with Kemba and Big Al but this is easily our best group since the original Hornets moved to NO. Man, what a shift in culture this new ownership group and front office has brought. So damn happy to see it after years of suffering and consistently meaningless games in this stretch of previous seasons.   Only 2.5 games out of the 6 seed, although Miami, Atlanta and Orlando have been playing well too. Gonna be a fun final stretch, hopefully we can get a top 8 seed at the very least. Celtics tomorrow will be a good test. Would be huge to keep the road winning streak up against a very hot top team on the 2nd half of a back to back. We’ve played Boston pretty well the last few years with much of this same group despite sucking so I do feel pretty good about it. Kon is due for a huge game coming off a few cold shooting games (although despite the poor shooting he’s been contributing well with defense, assists and rebounds).
    • It amazes me how underrated Horn has become after he finally was able to stay on the field. Sure last year wasn’t perfect but he was still a huge reason for our rebound defensively and I’d say he’s easily a top 10 corner. You don’t want to see Mike Jackson as our top corner. Any player is available for the right price but I’d be extremely hesitant to move Horn even for a big haul from LA.
