Bucky Brooks: Carolina building for Newton

You're using the word "scrubs" pretty loosely there. I wouldn't call Jordan Gross, Ryan Kalil, Travelle Wharton, Jonathan Steward, Steve Smith or DeAngelo Williams, scrubs. I also believe that Gettis and LaFell made a lot of progress as the season went on last year, plus we have Shockey now at TE.

This team does have some talent, despite what some of the talking heads say. They just need to shore up the RG position and get Otah's big ass back on the field, and the offense will be pretty good with some decent QB play.

The defense wasn't nearly as bad as some have claimed either. Their main problem was that they were on the field too much, and the offense consistently put them in crappy situations, by going 3 and out and turning the ball over way too much, which put them on a short field.

The ST's units are not without blame either. I'm hoping the Panthers can make a big jump in that phase of the game.

When I hear we are building an offense for Cam, that tells me there have been changes made and playmakers put in place to fit his style of play.

I don't think the whole offense is made up of scrubs, but when they were the worst offense in the league, and one of the worse in history, their past notoriety takes a hit.

To answer the base question, we're going to be running a Coryell offense.

Whether or not the prospect's respective skill sets fit that type of attack will certainly factor into the draft decision.

I sure hope that Chud is smart enough to adapt his offense to fit the skill sets of the players though.

I also hope that Rivera and his staff have plenty of say in who is drafted. I'm still not real clear on how that will work. I don't know for a fact, but my gut tells me that Fox had little or nothing to do with the last draft. I just don't believe he ever wanted Clausen or Edwards.

Yeah, but QB play was the #1 reason for them being the worst. That much was obvious.

I have no idea what he meant about building an offense for Cam though. That could be complete BS, for all I know.

last time Chud displayed his offense on an NFL field.....it was not the offense being run in SD recently.

some common elements but that SD is NOT Chud's offense. Chud could tweak his Browns offense and Cam would be a decent fit. Hand the ball off........then look to go deep on playaction and using his legs.

Chud just doesn't need to throw his entire playbook at ANY young QB year 1 of this era......

Chud helped Turner with play calling as well.. so I'm sure it'll be a mixture of both, if not a lot of SD concepts..

Newton needs to 1) Actually be drafted by us and then 2) show serious commitment to learning Chuds system before we can start building a team around him. Additionally, because of Auburn's offense, we don't exactly know what facets of RC's offense he may surprisingly excel at.

Like I said, we're not going to shove Cam into a system and tell him to learn it. They're going to take the base system Chud runs and adapt it to best fit what Cam does best. Saying Cam's not the same as Rivers is pointless; he doesn't have to be. Our version of that offense could potentially be quite different from what SD runs, even if the basics are the same.

And that is how you fail in the NFL. You NEVER modify a system for a QB. all great QB's fit in the system they were drafted for first, they learned it then worked with the coaches to tailored it somewhat to what they preferred.

Vick wasn't a QB worth a poo till he sat for a year and learned the Philly offense and finally realized he needed to change and fit a system.

If we want to succeed draft a QB that better fits the system Chud already has success with. To fit it to cam is a 1 read and run which isn't what QB's in the NFL do.

Yes, everyone remembers the days when Jim Harbaugh and Drew Bledsoe were running 4 wide sets to perfection and then Manning and Brady just stepped in and took the reins.

Depends on the approach.

Some teams do prefer to adapt the system to the players. Others, the Steelers for example, prefer to maintain the system and only draft players that fit into it. They'll tweak here and there, but generally avoid major changes.

Going by what they tend to say, I expect the Panthers to follow the Steeler model. But that's speculation.

He may be right here, but I don't agree they're "looking for sizzle". Hurney himself has said hype and excitement don't factor.

Trust no one: About five seconds after the season ends, GMs and teams go into “poker face” mode. To be clear, not everything that teams say is a lie or a smokescreen, but enough is that you should take pretty much everything with a grain of salt. And as a general rule, the closer it is to the draft, the worse it gets.

Unless you agree with them or it serves your purpose.
