How long do you keep your car

CRA

Recommended Posts

Do you guys generally ride your cars until they literally fall apart 12+ years down the road......or trade in after 5-8 years to ensure you have a generally reliable car.......or do you have to the latest and greatest every few years?

I try to keep mine maintained and drive them till the wheels fall off. Just bought a new car a few months ago only because we were handing down our 99' Camry to our son which has 215K miles on it and still drive and rides great.

We usually buy new so we know what we have and keep them about 10-12 years. The car we bought a few months ago will be kept until my 6 year old daughter is old enough to drive then handed off to her.

My wife and I change up every 3-4 years... I blame her because she's the one always wanting something different, and I end up taking her hand-me-down...

Of course, that was up until our most recent buys... her '08 Tahoe and my '07 Avalanche... Had them both since '09, and I don't ever see myself getting anything else unless this one totally craps out...

If anything, we'll get some sort of smaller car as a 3rd vehicle to save money on gas... $97 for me to fill up every week and a half is getting old pretty fast...

I currently find myself at this crossroad.

I have an 8 yr old car (paid off). That is always seems to be having issues. Which means time off work and arranging my schedule to get car to shop and out and a ride while it is in the shop.....and tons of consistant bills. .

I don't buy high end cars and when I do buy I will pay cash.....I just can't figure out when the hassle of a problem child car becomes not worth it. I like the idea of riding it until it can't be fixed but I think I like the idea of a reliable car my family could take anywhere (with little worry) better.

Depends on how much you like giving money to banks/car companies.

I have bought 3 new cars in my lifetime. 2 were 0% interest and 1 was 0.9%. No way I would pay 5%-10% interest (or more) on a car.

I wish I was financially able to pay cash. My parents have owned several new cars over the years and 2 boats (one is a 27 ft. Grady White) and have never had a payment on anything but their house. They were not rich at all..dad worked for the phone company and mom stayed home with the kids, but they saved until they had the money to pay cash. That mentality doesn't exist much in todays world.

    • You're assuming just as well.   Morgan and Canales were hired 3 days apart.  I believe it was partially due to their connections in Seattle.  i believe Tepper wanted some familiarity with his GM and HC.  It is so easy to sit back and arm-chair QB over draft picks.  You don't know what the philosophy was going into the 2024 draft.  I believe Canales and Morgan were drafting for the future.  XL and Brooks point to that philosophy. Name me one GM that is 100% on draft picks.  Just one.  You're not going to find one.    I think year one picks weren't for what can you do for me now but Potential.   XL hasn't lived up to the hype of a 1st rounder.  I think we all can agree on that. However, there still is hope he comes around.  What I believe they saw in him was his speed after the catch.  He needs to get more consistent but when he gets the ball you kind of hold your breath just a second because if he gets free, he's gone.  The Brooks pick was a signing for the future, and no one could have guessed he would re-injure the same ACL.  This makes the pick look bad but Dallas was ready to draft him later that same round.  IMO we'll have to see what happens next season before we can call this a bust. Wallace has improved each season and for a third rounder has done well.  Sanders has shown flashes and considering the pick in the 4th round it wasn't a bad pick.  His sophomore season IMO was a little bit more productive.  Smith-Wade has been a good addition and has played well.  For a 5th round pick to get as much playing time as he has.  Most picks below round 3 should take a couple of years to get up to speed.  He's been a decent player.  Crumedy, no comment We turned Barrett into Jackson.  This was an amazing move and basically got a starting CB for a 7th round pick.  Pretty shrewd if you ask me. Coker, maybe the best Free Agent signing of the 2024 draft class. So, in short, you can't say that the draft was a bust.  It isn't a home run but all but one are still on the team and outside of Brooks have made contributions to wins.  2025 draft class has been much better with almost every pick making contributions this season.  Now take Fitterer's two years and compare them to Morgan and tell me that they have the same philosophy.
    • He hasn’t led crap, he’s on loaded teams and a piece of the puzzle. And he’s he has improved drastically but it took the ultimate QB whispers in Shanahan and KOC. You put him on this Panther team and he’s back to normal Darnold
    • Slavin and Jarvis week to week. Florida cheap shots took out our two best players.  I’d start KK so he can beat the brakes off someone.
