QB Camp: Gabbert

Mr. Scot

It doesn't matter who we pick, or even if we do well in the next season. All threads will revert to Cam talk as soon as possible. I'm soon expecting all Lounge and Tinderbox threads to end up being diverted to people arguing about Cam Newton.

Because you can teach someone the playbook. But other things are not so easily taught.

IMO, the areas where Newton excels over Gabbert include:

1) Excellent field vision. Go back and look at the Auburn games. He has the ability to scan the field and make quick decisions, generally with a successful outcome. That includes finding the open receiver, anticipating where the defender will be, and finding running lanes.

2) Keeping cool under pressure. Find some plays where Newton panics and makes a really boneheaded play. I can't remember any.

3) Great ability to extend plays. I don't care about the 40 times. Put a ball in Newton's hands when no one is open and there is a running lane, and watch the magic.

While debatable, I also believe Newton has a better throwing motion. When he sets his feet as he will in the pro's, he has one of the most natural and fluid throwing motions I have ever seen.

Gabbert's head is definitely more pro-ready right now. Give them both two years, and I think you will see Newton greatly surpassing anything Gabbert can do on the field.

Agreed, except I don't think Gabbert is more pro-ready than Newton mentally and probably never wil be. He might be smarter than Newton and memorize playbooks faster, but if he hesitates on the field that won't matter.

When i want to win football games I'll call Newt. When I want a life line on Who Wants to be a Millionaire I'll give Gabbert a call. (That show is still relevant right?)

Didnt you know, QB is all cerebral, no athleticism or toughness required. The best & most classiest NFL QBs come from the ivy league. Soon as defenses see their helmet size and how large their brains are they become frightened!!! RAAAARRR!!! RAAAAR!!! LMAO!!!

QB play isn't just about physical skillset either. You have to have brains to go with the size/arm/legs etc. Come on KT you can do better then that weak sauce can't you....

Wow, I'm pretty sure comparing 5 min of chalk talk is not enough to say anyone is miles ahead

When one of them came from an offense that didn't even use words to call plays, yes. Yes it's fair.

That being said, there's no reason to believe Newton couldn't operate in a complicated NFL offense.

I will agree with this completely and say that is the reason I have said numerous times I have no problem with Newton being the pick as long as the F.O. does their homework and feels he can help the team win games. I don't want a guy to sell tickets....unless he's selling playoff tickets....

Seriously, every time I hear him talk about plays or breaking stuff down, i am thoroughly impressed with Gabbert. I watch him do drills and I straight up salivate.

Then I watch Game tape and get concerned.

I don't know what to think of him, even though I like him more than newton. I like how intelligent he is, but i don't like his production. it was said he would succeed in a pro style offense over a gimmicky spread one at mizzou, but who really knows?

Maybe I want him to be a great QB just because he honestly just LOOKS like a great QB should. Good looking kid, big, strong, great hair, smart...

I just hate this draft so damn much.

I would much rather see them regurgitate a play that neither has truly ran before. I'm not saying newton's football knowledge is greater than gabbert's. I just don't think any of us can make that call watching a 30 minute special on tv.

    • Same. I would prefer a MNF game earlier in the season. As if more likely has some significance in case things go south this season. If we perform well enough we could even get another game forced to a Sunday night spot later in the season.
    • Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
    • My top-5 JAGS: 1. Tommy Tremble: May not ever be top-tier, but has been solid and you never doubt the effort. 2. Cade Mays: Not bad for a 6th rounder. Hated to see him go. 3. Brady Christensen: One of the most versatile backup OLs in the NFL. Hopefully we re-sign him. 4. Trevis Gipson: Quietly was really solid depth last season. Glad we brought him back. 5. Brycen Tremayne: Has been solid depth at WR, flashing at times last year.
