Cam Newton vs Steve Smith

They both have histories. One has a history of assaulting teamates while the other stole a laptop, had parking tickets, and was involved in a pay for play scandal (allegedly). One is beloved by fans and the other seems to split them down the middle.

After reading the threads on Steve Smith and Cam Newton over the last few weeks (ad nauseum) how can we turn a blind eye to one's past transgressions and not the other. If Cam's character is one of his biggest issues how is it that Steve Smith gets a pass? Why don't we hold all players up to the same standard....

Because Steve Smith performs at a very high level and he's already here....just a guess.

Steeler fans love Big Ben, Philly fans love Vick.....

once a guy suits up for you and if he helps you win...for the most part, nothing else matters. Homer glasses always go on. Steve Smith is a horrible teammate and a douchebag.....but most of us would paint him as the ideal Panther.

Because historically players with legal, personal, or anger problems are usually more trouble than they are worth. Their detriment to their teams outweigh their value. There are a few exceptions of course, and Smith is one. Also, Smith's issues didn't arise, at least publicly, until after he was a productive member of the panthers.

If Cam is drafted and enjoys anything close to Smith's level of success with the Panthers, then he will be embraced like anyone else. At this point in time, however, he has done exactly squat for the Panthers, and his legal problems, and elitist attitude are a turn off for many people who have concerns about him being potentially detrimental to the team.

Two fights hardly compares to Newton's list of crap. Plus, Smith was already here and a contributor, you have a chance now to avoid that type of crap by avoiding Newton.

Come on Joat, I understand you really dont want Cam, but breaking two teammates faces is just as bad if not worse than Cam's stuff. If smitty beat up two strangers and got convicted on assault charges, would it be worse then?

Smitty, is my all-time favorite player, but his stuff is worse than Cam's.

He was just a 2nd year return man when he assaulted Anthony Bright.

I don't see how Newton's past character issues even come close to comparing to assault on a teamate.

Again I am just curious as to how one gets a pass over another.

Does production = forgiveness

If Cam is drafted and leads us to a Super Bowl....can/will you forget about his past?

Technically, Simple Assault, is a lesser charge than Possession of Stolen Goods, or even Grand Larceny, it's "Grand" if the value is more than $500 in NC btw.

    • It works very well it’s just frustrating because it can win enough games to keep those three coaches employed even when they don’t innovate or ever make a decision that doesn’t come from a chart. If they weren’t so robotic in their decision making they’d be in the top tier of NFL coaches.
    • For Bryce’s obvious shortcomings (bad pun), there is upside to his game. This isn’t being a homer or apologists, but I like to consider myself fair in criticism.  He’s far tougher than I ever thought he’d be. I really thought homie would have been broken in half by now. I don’t know how he’s not, but he’s not.  He is prone to turning the ball over early in games which digs a huge hole the team is not built to come back from, but dude DOES come up with crucial first down in crucial situations. It’s NEVER pretty, but he just kind of has the shining. He gets bailed out LOTS, and the team still loses games because of him, but he’s a bit of an enigma. He’s a turnover machine that is clutch in big moments.  He’s a smart/elusive cat. He kind of has to be with his limitations. His audibles are almost always correct and he understands coverages. I don’t see him getting fooled too frequently. His turnovers are almost never the ‘damnit Jake/Cam!’ brand we have been accustomed to. They are ALWAYS due to his size/strength limitations.  Strip sacks that shouldn’t be. Picks that happened because he just don’t got that NFL arm. He is still prone to panicking and the wheels can and do fall off at a much higher rate than his peers.  The team is winning on the backs of the defense, running game and special teams… but they’re winning, and unbelievably 1 game behind Tampa. As long as this is happening and Bryce doesn’t go full meltdown, Dave is going to keep him in. He is not getting pulled.
    • This was a terrible podcast. A bunch of uninformed homers that had worse takes than the bottom 10% of the Huddle. I listened to a handful of podcasts this past offseason in search of new Panthers material since John Ellis doesn't do his pod anymore and The 4 Man Rush don't either. Immediately deleted it after the handful I listened to. Truly terrible.
