Can we even trade Smith right now if we wanted to?

No the Panthers can't trade him during this draft. The NFL locked down this draft after they lost the stay and said that trades could only involve picks.

Which is a violation of anti-trust laws and direct orders from the Judge. If the players show that the NFL refused to open for business by locking down the FA trades and signings, then the NFL will face collusion charges too. The Judge said teams do not have to sign or trade FA, but she didn't say to lock down transactions, only to use their discretion. An across the board lockdown on FA signings and trades is a direct challenge to the court ordered lift of the lockout.

It's going to get real next week, when this hits the fan.

The postponement of free agency until the rules get ironed out is not a direct challenge to the court ordered lifting of the lockout. Nothing is going to be in stone until the appeal process is complete. First ESPN said the appeal court has granted a temporary stay and then rescinded the statement an hour later saying the stay was likely but not yet granted. With all the confusion and no clear direction on how free agency will be done given there isn't a CBA in place, these determinations will have to be made before free agency will start. Will it be the last best offer by the NFL, the 2010 rules continued or something else.

No one is locking down transactions simply waiting for some negotiations on what things need to look like going forward.

I don't know if the NFL hires someone to listen in on team to team calls during the Draft, but you can always sort of like...wink wink/nudge nudge a team in terms of Smitty. But yeah, you can't make an actual trade. I'd love to see Brady throw it to Steve...unless Cam can be like Freeman by the end of the year. If he can, I'd of course rather see Cam to Smitty. But Freeman had a piss poor first season. I think Cam will as well before he gets it together.

In her ruling Wednesday, Nelson said the NFL must decide what to do about free agency.

"This court's order does not obligate the NFL to enter into contracts, nor does it proscribe the league's non-lockout conduct in general," Nelson wrote. "Like any defendant in any lawsuit, defendants themselves must make a decision about how to proceed and accept the consequences of their decision."

The way this reads is pretty clear to me. The Judge will not demand that they enter into contracts, but the NFL will face consequences, meaning to me that if collusion takes place, such as a lock down on FAs until the appeal court rules, then the NFL will accept and face consequences. Basically, you don't have to sign a player if you don't want to, but to refuse across the board to sign or trade FAs is not what the judge allowed and WARNED that this action would have consequences.

    • You have gave the board some recent gold via posting. Heres my poor attempt at the truthful play-by-play of the time during post- I pulled out the old laptop to do my shitposting and check on websites. Open the huddle and see this new thread. Open thread and read CRAs post, {inner thinking, oooOOooo this is my lane and I got this}. Make sure not to scroll even to the 2nd post. 23% of current neurons still firing start up and two names appear- Captain and Josh....... about another 43 seconds past "O GOD" it's July 4th weekend and I got medicine to pick up. (If the laptop didn't give away my aging, the meds should...) I need to split, think long panther careers and the hint-  Ryan Kalil was a late 2nd and Pro bowls(even all-pros too) he's got to be OLman and Mikie Minter is among the all-time Panthers career leaders. Drop my post. Scramble to get keys, wallet, and phone. Check my phone- its 17% battery.....fug I now have to raw dog the pickup line and put the phone on charge.... Flip flops, sweat ringed filled hat, and shades acquired. Get in my pos rav4 and think about not running the A/C. Pull out the drive way and reach the 1st stop light, A/C is wide open. I check my shirt to see if there's any new stains on my house shirt, bush off the Bojangles salt that I see.... Neurons re-fire and focus on the comments CRA made that no one would get this....... Dang IT, that means it isn't Ryan Kalil or Mike Minter! CVS is close, but I know its impossible I get back withing 10 minutes to change my post and my phone is on the charger. {Think you monkey, at one point you were a draft nerd}. Reach the CVS line, by some grace its not 5 cars deep during 5 o'clock traffic hell. Im second in line after the car in front of me both turn in, they have to go back and forth to line up while Im a pro for that geometry. Neurons finally reach peak performance as Ive re-thought draft classes. Think obscure and unknown 7th rounders with long careers. Some Sunday/Monday night member berry fell out of my Melon, Will montgomery during the players intros for washington. I thought he out of the league and was shocked to see him still playing around the 2015 years. I do a goggle background check and that refreshed memory. Pick up the meds and enjoy the sweet smelling cool CVS air. Driving back and check in on one of the local bums at the big stop light, wow he's got a new fancy rug. Think about all the old food I got and need to start giving it away and rethink it. Reach home and post a follow up and I know Minter is wrong too, I check the draft history and see Robert Mcclain. Too late, but that would have been my guess....open CRAs link and get "upset" at the DBs name.
    • THANKS my guy! Keeping up with this threads theme, if I view a thread and there's only 20 posts and some time passes. If I see there's one new post and read the name; @Dave Gettleman's Shortsis among the chosen few that I will reopen that thread just to see what you posted.    Thanks again, plus not just a scout, thats scotty mccloughans son?!?!? If not for the deep claws of booze, scotty is among the best talent finders this league has recently had. Last I heard he ran a consulting business. Caden could be one of those who's on a early path to being a GM in the future. I was a big fan of his dad, dam shame about booze demon ruining his career.
