Smith supposedly wants out...

Smitty is being tight lipped out of respect for the Panthers. He has indicated to the front office that he would like a trade, but if he publically said it during Q&A sessions then his trade value would drop. This might not affect Smitty, but it affects the Panthers in a big way.

Would you rather let Smith go for a 4th round pick next year, or only be able to salvage a 5th or 6th round pick? It is not easy to get trade value for a player when the other team's argument is "He doesn't even want to be there, you're gonna have to move him." The Patriots only had to trade away a 5th rounder for Randy Moss, and then he broke the record for TD's in a season by a WR. Regardless of whether Smitty stays or goes, he is being a professional right now despite how it looks. We should be grateful the way he is handling this.

Ya I think thats whats gonna happen. I will say thought that if the trade isnt good enough he will just have to deal with it. Hope he would take it like a man and work hard and not whine about it. Oh well.

With his attitude, I bet he is gone no matter what. Even now he is trying to make his case known without saying anything. I think he would be a cancer if he stays. Fox in Denver will want him. We will get a third rounder for him at best, IMO.

That is interesting...is there a link to that?

Rivera said he would do what was best for the team. I take that to mean he is not going to give Smitty away. A good deal for the Panthers or Smitty stays.

iirc, it was something he told someone in here in a one on one conversation. he had his own health issues going on recovering from the transplant and he wished he had gotten involved earlier.

i should have said "supposedly" in there somewhere, but from what has been known of smith and the way he has acted, i doubt its far off from the truth on the chance that the conversation actually didn't happen.

i would like for smith to be here, but only if he is positive influence. none of that crap from last year. if he isn't going to have a positive mind about what is going on then i don't want him anywhere near this team.

i agree with what you said. rivera (and i am confident in saying the same of hurney) want whats best for the team, not a single player. that means not letting smith go for nothing. if smith's contract was up, then it might be another story, but since he is under contract for a couple more years...the only way he leaves is via trade.

the panthers > steve smith. doesn't matter what he has done in the past.

First off, there's a big qualitative difference between the circumstances under which Moss was traded and the circumstances we find ourselves in with Smith. I don't see much value in that comparison because I don't think the situations are likely as similar as you contend them to be.

Second, our response to a team offering less because "he doesn't even want to be there," would be "regardless of whether he wants to be here or not, he's under contract until 2012 so offer more or you can pay for his services when he becomes a free agent." The Panthers don't have to move anybody who is under contract.

If a trade happens it's because Jerry Richarson and Steve Smith sat down and had a good long discussion and they jointly came to the decission that Smith needed to be traded.

Smitty and JR have a relationship unlike any other player and owner in the NFL. It goes beyond business and football and even if/when Smitty leaves that relationship will continue. I think Smitty probably also feels like he is in a tough spot with JR being so vocal in the CBA negociations.

However, I think in the end Smitty ends up staying in Carolina and the reason has more to do with the other 31 teams. In the end, Smith wants to feel like he is being respected and if teams don't really offer up 1st or 2nd round picks, Smith might just stay to show them how valuable he really is.

He can't show how valuable he really is without a QB to throw to him. I know we are all excited to see what Cam can do, myself included in that, the realist knows the majority of the time a rookie QB doesn't come in and light it up right away. The odds are against Smitty being able to return to form here in Carolina this year. He has no proven QB right now.

That's not a slight against Cam, JC, Pike, or Moore. It's just the truth.

rivera's opinion would have to play a significant part of it. if smith is turning into a grumpy old man (which is the way it looks) then you have to consider him a high maintenance player and when you are a new HC with a very young team, you don't want some player like that demanding so much of your time. they brought back proehl for him....brought in his old WR coach....got him a new QB. they did as much as they could for him without backing away from their desire and plan to build this team using young players. the ball is in his court and if he doesn't want to play, he's not worth the effort. you've got to work with people who are happy to work with you and are on board with what you are doing. you're either part of the solution or part of the problem...a part that needs to be eliminated.

    • Great season regardless of what happens. From starting out 4-14 to ending 44-38 is incredible progress and future is bright from here. I do think we can beat the Heat and then win on the road against either Orlando or Philly assuming Embiid doesn’t miraculously return sooner. But if not, a higher draft pick is nice too
    • I know a DT that's asking for a trade: 🤔 maybe a home discount can be worked out. Dan Morgan could create up to $80 million in space through restructures of stars like Derrick Brown, Jaycee Horn, or Taylor Moton. They could also include players like Tershawn Wharton ($18.6M cap hit) in the trade to balance the salaries. Carolina Receives: DT  Dexter Lawrence II New York Receives: 2026 2nd Round Pick (No. 51 Overall): A premium Day 2 selection that fits the for  Lawrence  after his 0.5-sack season in 2025. WR  Xavier Legette : A young, high-upside receiver who provides the playmaking depth HC John Harbaugh needs for his offense. 2026 4th Round Pick: Immediate mid-round value. 2027 4th Round Pick (via MIN): Future capital acquired in the  Adam Thielen  trade.  ----- Stone Forsythe* (another young player as a potential trade option)provides immediate offensive line retooling for HC John Harbaugh.    John Harbaugh's history in Baltimore proves he values draft volume over individual superstars.    Just my 2cents
    • Moved to Tuesday, not Wednes because of scheduling with Flyers game or something in Philly. But I don't feel good about the Heat.  It has been a great season regardless.  Team just been playing so hard to move up since a bad start and just picked a bad time to get gassed.  It's like almost everyone is shooting cold at the same time even wide open shots.   Maybe atmosphere and playoffs kick off a spark.  I'd rather be in a series than a one and done though. The team has a good foundation to build on regardless of what happens.
