Doing some research: Training camp

Recommended Posts

What kind of activities have you or would you be looking for when you come to Spartanburg for training camp, besides camp activities? Music, outdoor activities, family-friendly activities, restaurants?

I'm doing some research for some materials I'm putting together.

(Please, try to keep smartass "Spartanburg sucks" comments to a minimum. Thanks.)

Honestly when I go I come for two things:

1. To see the Panthers

2. To get diabetes and high blood pressure from the Beacon drive in.

I know last year they had movie nights for the little kids and stuff but I don't know what movies they played.

They showed "The Blind Side" and "Radio." I expect they will do movie nights again.

I'm actually talking about activities outside of what they will be doing at camp.

Of course, the Beacon will be included!

the highlight of his year's camp will be when the players show up for it.

After that, and if it is like any other time I have visited the crowd is more entertainment than the practice. If you can somehow make a family-friendly game out of watching grown men make fools out of themselves trying to get something signed or a handshake then you and fam will be plenty entertained. It's ridiculous.

With Cam it might even be the most embarrassing scene yet.

There are members of this forum however that brave the madness almost daily and provide very useful breakdowns from camp. I mention that so you won't forget to log in and read between sessions as it is almost impossible to stay focused for the eavesdropping of some of the most ridiculous conversations, comments, and actions of some of our fans.

God bless 'em.

I get frustrated enough listening to some of the most asinine comments posted on this forum.. and based on some of the dumb poo I hear from people away from this board, it blows this forum away with ignorance..

I couldn't imagine hearing a collection of fools in one central location..

http://gerhardscafe.net/

Gerhards cafe is probably my favorite restaurants in the upstate. The website doesnt off much about it, so Ill try and describe it. Its an Austrian place, so all around it has an austrian european kinda atmosphere. Theres several different sections there. When you first walk in, there is bar section that is pretty laid back. Behind the bar is the "jean section" part of the restaurant. There is a more formal dress up side thats blocked off from the rest of the place, that has the white linen tables, chandaliers and such. Then theres what I call a barn section, that has another bar and a place where they sell brick oven pizzas. Its a little more lively out there. Finally, theres an out door patio section thats nice.

They got a pretty good selection of beer, and the food is great. Anytime Im in spartanburg, I definately try to make time for this place.

I went last year and most of the stuff happened at the far end practice field. Why is that? It would be nice if most of the action occured on the two fields closer to the side with the big hill. Yes, I know the practices are not for the sole purpose of fan entertainment.

it moves around. next day it will be some other field. really know way to know ahead of time which field it will be on (unless they are doing it at the stadium).

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
