People who say we should cut Baker over this and claim he is not a real athlete or football player are complete idiots. The dude can punt his ass off and the Panthers would be insane to let him go. Go back and watch some tape last year. The dude probably punted more than anyone in the NFL last season and did a hell of a job at it. The guy can punt with, if not better than, the best of them and therefore we need him. He will be instrumental in getting our defense the field position they need to win on downs Sunday after Sunday. Not to mention the dude was given MVP honors for a few of the games last season. I mean what punter ever gets MVP recognition lol?!?

Baker was at a Bobcats game a couple years ago... and when the PA announcer said "We have some celebrities in the house!" they panned to Jason Baker... he looked into the videoboard and looked confused and said "Why me?"... lol apparently Baker isn't embracing his stardom. Maybe this is a new Jason Baker we're seeing...Sauerbrun part 2.

Mercifully, it appears official. The “what number will Cam Newton wear?” mini-controversy is over.

After the Panthers drafted the Heisman Trophy winner No. 1 overall last month, talk turned to which quarterback — Newton or incumbent Jimmy Clausen — would wear No. 2 for Carolina. Clausen didn’t seem inclined to hand over the number, which Newton donned at Auburn, or his job.

During a Friday visit to NFL Network — he’ll appear on “NFL Total Access” at 7 p.m. ET — Newton set the record straight on the jersey-versy. Let’s just say he has bigger things on his mind.

“I really don’t care. It’s just a number to me,” Newton said. “Gossip sells, and I understand that with people hearing I wore No. 2 in college, and Jimmy has it right now, (but) it’s not a big deal to me. I just want to get that out of the way and throw it out there. It’s not the number. It’s the person wearing it.”

For the sake of Panthers punter Jason Baker, who also spoke out about the story, and many others, hopefully this whole thing has been put to bed. And if you’re wondering what number Newton will wear, he doesn’t know — or seem to care much.

Someone asked Newton if he wanted the No.2 jersey WITHOUT mentioning Clausen and he said "Yes" the media and the HUDDLE are dragging this out to a non-story, so get your fugging facts straight! Cam has not commented on this matter any further, and Baker needs stfu and stop adding more fuel to the fire for the media.

If some of these guys actually took the time to listen to Cam's interview with Frank and Moose on WFNZ a few weeks back (right after the draft), they'd know that Cam didn't DEMAND the #2. In fact, he said that he's not worried about the jersey number at all. He was asked by a reporter which jersey # he wanted, and Cam told the reporter that he'd like the #2 (which happens to be the number JC has)...big deal, eh? Cam also mentioned he's alway worn that number b/c that's how his mother refers to him (as the #2 of her three sons), but he reiterated that he didn't care about the jersey number and wasn't coming in to step on anyone's toes or demand anything. unless you consider it hate to say "He doesn't deserve to choose from any number, he should pick from what is available like anyone else."

yet there are a ton of posts saying either Cam deserves anything he wants or our punter needs to "learn his role" despite the fact he was practically our fugging MVP last year, lol. some of you guys are ridiculous.

srsly. you guys are all being fooled by the media and going crazy. this is a non-issue, and Cam doesn't really care either way. All he did was say "Sure I like the #2" basically and that turned into him deserving it, him bullying Clausen who is bullying Baker... I mean it's retarded. None of it is real. Cam is seeming more reasonable about all this than the fans. I guess that's no surprise.

For the record, I don't think anyone is in the wrong here. Cam just stated his preference for the jersey # based on a question from a reporter. And no, I don't think Baker or Clausen should give up their numbers to appease Cam, but based on several interviews, Cam isn't expecting them to nor is he expecting anything else to be just handed to him.

It drives me crazy when some of these posters try to spin this as Cam "demanded" a jersey # or some other foolishness. All you have to do is read or listen to the countless interviews to get the facts instead of talking out of your arse (not you, Mav). Sounds to me that some here will stretch anything that comes out this kid's mouth to justify their "hate' and it's beyond tiresome and ridiculous. Just stop already. Geez!

This is the worst story in Panthers history. I think he has every right to see if Clausen will give up the number w/o it being a big deal and if he doesn't get it I doubt he is going to really care that much.

Some of that is Cam's fault he should have said from the get go "I'm not really concerned about that right now."

Instead he was honest and said "Sure I would like the number" and suddenly it is a big deal.

But flipside of this is... for all who were excited about the attention Cam would draw for the Panthers, this is some of the bullpoo that goes with it. Media manufactured controversies.

Sorry, this is really simple for me - Cam is supposed to be our franchise QB, he should get whatever number he wants.

yes it is simple. read your own words...

he isn't yet. he's just another drafted QB who hasn't proved anything yet.

if he turns into the second coming of christ, then clausen will be gone one way or another, and i am sure cam will have first dibs at the number.

      I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.

      Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.

      Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
