My job situation...

Company A

So I just finished the year as the #2 sales rep in my company (out of 500+ reps). This got me a pretty sweet promotion (along with a 30% increase in pay overnight). Also, my commissions will double. All-in-all I will probably bring in 90-100k this year.

Interestingly enough, I got a call from a recruiter last week for a medical device company (Company B) who is hiring in my area. This company is one of the very best, most stable med device companies in the world. I interviewed for it, and it went REALLY, REALLY well. In fact, my income potential should be around 110-150k my first year.

I got a really good thing going at Company A and it for all-tense-and-purposes is fairly stable. I also won a trip for an all-inclusive paid vacation in a few months in the Caribbean. The company treats me well, and I like my manager.

However company B can be very financially rewarding, and I could be making over 200k in five years (some reps are making 400k). I believe this position to be rather stable at least for a couple of years, and I know I could learn this business and be good at it. Plus, I think I would be pretty happy doing this.

However, I am torn (its a little early cause I dont have an offer yet). My stock is WAY HIGH right now on my resume and if there was any time to switch careers, now would be that time.

Ohh and by the way, we are expecting our first baby soon (: and the Mrs. wants to quit her job and stay at home.

Advise.:patriot:

Don't sweat it till you actually get an official offer from company "B" but Money isn't everything especially since you seem to be doing rather well with your current company.

I know a couple of guys in the medical device field and some of the companies look good from the outside but not so good once you get on board. I am curious what medical co. you are referring to. If you want, PM me with the company and I might be able to get some details.

The devil you know is sometimes better than the devil you don’t know.

I for the first time in years have a somewhat stable job. I could go off and get a job most places in sales with the potential to make more but I have been burnt in the past and like the company I'm at. I work with my old man and they are grooming me to take his place in a couple years. I get paid a little less than I'd like but my quality of life is better.

I wouldn't let fear force my hand on this decision. sometimes you have to jump and trust your instincts/talents to prevail.

if you can have everything with company B that you already have at company A, then I would go for it.

company trips exist in every industry I've been involved in, but regardless, if you are making double the amount of money, you can afford to spend $6,000-10,000 on an extravagant vacation. Hell, you could take 20 if you wanted.

so my main concerns would be will your stress increase? is your new boss/higher ups going to be jerkoffs? the company is the most stable, so is there any reason job security would be an issue? and are the hours the same? or less/more? if less, great. if more, you have a baby on the way.

You wont win big if you dont gamble big...Hate to use the word 'gamble' when it comes to your livelihood, but the analogy fits.. But money doesnt necessarily mean happiness. You cant really put a price on having employment with very little dumbsh_t... Stick with A, unless B comes back with a better offer...

    • I am trying to remember when I EVER said reach for need. My thing if someone falls you jump, if you can trade back a few slots and get help at the right value and pick up some ammo to move up from 51 which I think is outside the money zone, then you do that.   Take a WR later. Plenty of capable WRs have come from the 3rd round. Though this year I would go for C there if there was a reasonable choice. Take a TE if you must. I see more reason to take WR than TE. I think you give guys drafted two years ago and last year a chance to develop before cancelling them.    I think it is kind of unrealistic to throw everything all in on offense in hopes of going deep in the playoffs after an 8-10 year, even if it did have some nice bright spots in it.    And outside of this argument but relevant to it, I am bothered by Canales and Morgan and their apparent posture that we have arrived and are now in the big boy club. I don’t know where that comes from. They are out there talking like they are winners at 8-10. Backing into the playoffs in a real convoluted tie breaker scenario. They had some good games, yes. But the big feather n the cap, the LA Rams matchups, did you see what the Rams did? They didn’t fire the coaches but they fired their defensive backs. Bryce beat them yes, and it was pretty, but it was kind of like the Bucs and Mike Evans picking on our decimated secondary in 2022. Someone (Wilks) went down for allowing that to happen and they went down in LA too.  Wr aren’t as good as a whole lot of homers think we are. Shore up the trenches.    I think too many fans buy into it because they are so starved for anything that looks like a winner.
    • How exactly does one win OROY "by default"? Wouldn't winning the award mean that of the two, McMillon stayed strong the entire year while the other guy didn't and fizzled out? That's like saying Secretariat only won by default because the other horse stopped moving midway through the race. Absolutely zero logic in that statement, which makes me very glad that I've never really paid much attention to Walterfoozball.
    • I agree, teams in the past have fired the HC in order to retain a coach on staff...hell it happened to Mcderp this year, rams in the past and Im missing another.  The fall off for the Panthers team defense was huge once Mcderp leftd and Ron could not fix it even when he named himself DC.
