Gantt and the Observer on Jimmy Clausen, Jonathan Stewart, and Charles Johnson

Recommended Posts

Guess there isn't much to talk about at Winthrop these days... LOL

I would love to know the story behind his "re-assignment", he must have really pissed someone off.

Someone had a theory... Mr. Scot or Fiz? Something along the lines of Gantt giving a negative view of the organization, and the organization needing the control the media to help shape public perceptions. It was interesting and actually made a lot of sense. Not surprising but a lot of the 'proposed evidence' in the thread is interesting. I am thinking it was Fiz...not sure where the thread is.

Give me deangelo 100 times out of 100.

If you had to chose between the two....and chose DWill....you should turn in your man card. You apparently know NOTHING about football.

I love DWill and want to see him here. But with the RB's and DE's we have on roster, CJ is much more important to this team than DWill.

What does a man card have to do with this?

I love Stewart but people need to remember that he gets a lot of his yards in the 4th qtr. when teams are tired. He reminds me a lot of Marion Barber. Barber couldn't excel as the starter b/c he made his living in the 4th qtr. pounding defenses when tired.

this is not true.

check his situational stats for the past couple of seasons. his yards are pretty evenly distributed throughout games.

Having said this, I think J Stew. is a better back and can probably do well as an every down back, but this is an unknown.

unknown?

looking at his numbers and performances when he's been the starter, what more does the kid have to do to prove himself?

He's started 19 games the last 2 seasons. So? He's really only got 2.5 years as a full-time starter under his belt, and of those, he's not had to carry the load of an every-down back because he's had Stewart there.

that's the problem.

he's not carrying the load of an every down back, but he's missed almost as much time as clinton portis has the past 2 seasons...an injury prone guy who's been used and abused since 2002.

I didn't know the man card dealt with football knowledge and judgement. To certain extent but not enough to warrant a confiscation of my man card.

But I can say choosing D-Will over Johnson means you should turn in your smart card.

maybe new york picked a bad day to have a bad day, but only 2 running backs were able to rush for 100+ yards on them the entire 2009 season.

the other guy was marion barber.

the giants had the 8th ranked rush defense before stewart embarrassed them.

so no...not just anyone was gonna rip off 200+ on them.

do you remember how they were tackling? Anybody would have ripped off 200+ against them. They we're in some kind of chaotic defensive meltdown the last 4 games. The Giants were falling apart and Stewart was there to make them look even more foolish. When is the last time Brad Hoover could get 18 yards as a runningback? Maybe his rookie season.

if williams had done it, would we be having this discussion?

how many teams/individuals has stewart made look absolutely stupid when they tried to tackle him? why is the giants game an exception?

really?

name all the top 10 rush defenses williams has effectively run well against.

2006

he did well against the vikings and the 2nd falcons game where he took around 10 snaps in the wildcat.

2007

he did well against the cards and cowboys

But Stewart wasn't in the league then so it's kind of hard to say that it's definite proof that Williams is better.

2008

Pretty much any game Williams did well in Stewart did well in. Williams was usually more productive but they both did well.

One of the games I listed, the Bears game was where Stewart really sparked a comeback and carried the team against a good D. Willliams was inneffective.

Against the Giants Stewart was ineffective and Williams was the one who carried the team.

2009

Both Williams and Stewart played well against Atlanta both times

Stewart played very well against the vikings

2010

For the time that Stewart and Williams were together for 6 games Williams was clearly the more effective back. I think Stewart did better vs. Tampa. None of those

Stewart played well against the Steelers. As well as Atlanta. Although I really question how impressive it was to run against Atlanta that day.

So all time I guess it's 7-6 in favor of Williams and when they are both playing it's 2-2 tied.

I've long maintained the view that Williams is more effective when the going gets tough. If the team is playing poorly or if we are just matched against a really tough D Williams can still get it done.

2010 was a big qualifier for that. Williams out played Stewart even though the team was playing pretty bad. Williams was still able to squeak out something to build on while Stewart was shut down.

I don't like Stewart's running style as a lead back, you often hear the term downhill runner when talking about Stewart. If holes are breaking down teams can get to him before he has anytime to run downhill gaining momentum. At that point Williams is still agile enough to get out of trouble while Stewart is going to have a lot harder time.

Yes it is unknown. Contrary to what 90% of the Huddle thinks, having 4-5 good games as a starter does not mean you have proven yourself. I think Matt Moore and Goodson (aka fumbles until he proves me wrong) have proven this point.

Don't get me wrong, Stewart is one of my favorite players and he is a stud, but he has not proven to me that he can be an every down back - YET. Just my opinion, you are certainly entitled to yours. If he did it for a solid season and stayed healthy, I would be convinced. Until then, it is an unknown.

Just to play devil's advocate, I said the same thing about DW (and most of the Panther's fans did as well) before he proved himself and had a break out year.

I really think it is a moot point because DW isn't going anywhere.

According to your qualifiers the giants game is an exception because they were not a top 10 rushing D. Plus they were tackling like they were on muscle relaxers. That was some of the worst tackling I've ever seen. Impressive plays come from bad tackling. Williams nice run against the broncos in 08 was really just an epic defensive breakdown. Anytime they've played bad teams they both make them look foolish so I don't see the point.

I don't feel like getting into stats analysis much at all. I think there is some correlation but football is usually to chaotic to pin down with stats. It's fun but not always accurate.

    • lol, that second part is quite literally one of the dumbest things ever. Having or not having guaranteed contracts has absolutely nothing to do with how much these billionaires have to pay.  Because there is a hard cap and a minimum cap spend requirement, and teams either use their cap or roll it over to use it all the next year, so the owners have to pay the same amount of money in the end no matter what. Having fully guaranteed contracts in the NFL would only hurt salary cap management, and thus would end up screwing over the team and its fan base when teams kiss on signings as they take up cap room that is needed to improve the roster. Look at the Browns with Watson, they gave him the fully guaranteed deal and all it’s doing is sucking up massive cap space now.  If they hadn’t done that, the owner would still be paying the same amount of money each year as that cap space would still be used elsewhere. If you want to argue for fully guaranteed contracts because the players deserve it, that’s an entirely different argument and a fair one to discuss.  But anyone against fully guaranteed deals isn’t doing it to argue for the billionaire owners.

    • Ryabkin could be the steal of the draft, he was a Top 10 pick heading into last season and had a rough year.  Lots of GMs passed on him because of that and his workouts. Pick has really high upside and Svech should be able to translate Rod tearing his arse a new one for making dumb plays since Svech has had several years of it.  🤣😂
