An NCAA investigation into his father's alleged improper conduct hung over Cam Newton during the NFL draft process, but it didn't stop the Carolina Panthers from taking the quarterback No. 1 overall.

And, Cecil Newton said, it won't define him either. In fact, he's confident the NCAA's probe won't turn up anything past last year's ruling that he asked Mississippi State for a six-figure payment for his son's services in 2009.

"We really just want it to calm down, let the smoke settle, let the dust settle," Newton told The Charlotte Observer on Thursday. "The truth is out there. They have it in their files."

Asked if he requested money from Auburn, the school his son eventually attended, Newton said: "According to what the NCAA findings are, that's what we're going with."

Newton gave the rare interview in Bradenton, Fla., where he watched Cam work out in preparation for his first NFL season. Cam was cleared by the NCAA, which ruled he didn't know about his father's actions, and kept playing, leading Auburn to the BCS national championship last season.

Now the Newtons are waiting for the lingering NFL lockout to end so Cam can sign a contract that should be lucrative but not worth as much as past No. 1 deals. That's because the next collective bargaining agreement is expected to include a rookie wage scale that will prevent deals like the $50 million guaranteed that top pick Sam Bradford received from the St. Louis Rams last year.

"I just want Cam to get out here, get on board with his team, do the right things on and off the field, and the rest will take care of itself," Cecil Newton said. "He's played for so long for free that anything we make, man, is a blessing."

I really hope this investigation and all this mess is over with by the time the season starts, whenever that may be.

Won't matter. I feel confident Cam's pops took money (just look at his bs response on that article). Only thing it impacts is Auburn....not Carolina.

all Cam has to do is say he didn't know (which falls in line with the NCAA) and divert/redirect any questions about how he feels on the subject..

shouldn't be that big of a distraction..

and it ain't like Cam hasn't dealt with that talk and played great football....

at some point, Cam probably will have college stuff come up......and just like with Reggie Bush the only story line will be w/ that university.

      Bryce Young is a problem — what would you do if you were Dan Morgan?

      It’s going to get wild after this Sunday.  I would assume Dave has a really smart plan.   Sorta like the AZ plan last year.    After a big turnover heavy  bad game Bryce normally reels it in.  Bryce will have one of his standard 60% for 200 days and the Bryce defenders will use that as a “ I told you he is good” games.

      Bryce is a really smart kid and I'm sure he knows all the answers to the test but he hasn't been able to overcome his lack of physical tools and other DC's know this and play him accordingly. I think Bryce has good processing but when the correct read is the WR 30 to 40 yards down field and you have a defensive lineman coming at you what can he really do? He just doesn't have the arm to effectively and consistently hurt the defense and I think that's what's gonna do him in.  Pime example look at the INT versus Dallas last year when Thelien was wide open down the seam and Bryce threw it from a clean pocket and the ball was way short. Dc's watched that and knew that Bryce can't throw the ball deep.

      I'd give Bryce until the trade deadline to prove he's the answer and if he's not I'm dumping him for whatever pick we can get and I'm riding with Dalton the rest of the way.  2 and a half years is enough time to determine if he can be the QB going forward so for Bryce he needs to come out over the next couple of weeks and show that. The other players in the locker room don't wanna waste another year of their careers waiting to see if you'll ever figure it out.  If you took a poll of the players in the locker room I'm sure they'd rather lose with a respected veteran Dalton who at least gives them some creditability versus losing with Bryce who the entire media will say was let down by his supporting cast when in reality it's Bryce's physical limitations that are holding this team back.
