very good and encouraging read from person...

Had a chance to check out Cam Newton's throwing session Thursday at IMG Academies in Bradenton, Fla., with former Panthers QB Chris Weinke.

.

.

.

Newton has the Panthers' playbook, about 90 percent of which Weinke has installed.

When Newton gets together with Weinke, the sessions are designed to mimic what Newton would be doing in Charlotte.

Here's how they work it:

Weinke gives Newton the play call, using the precise Panthers' terminology (including line protections).

Newton repeats the play as he would in the huddle, then simulates a huddle break by slapping the ball.

Newton calls out the Panthers' cadence at the line of scrimmage, then drops backs and makes the throw. (On Thursday he had Giants WR Michael Clayton, Browns TE Alex Smith, Detroit rookie WR Titus Young and a couple of small-college receivers catching passes).

.

.

.

Weinke said he has made only minor tweaks with Newton's mechanics, and has been impressed with the way Newton has approached the sessions in Bradenton.

"He wants to be great," Weinke said.

supposedly sunday person goes into more detail.

looking forward to it (esp. considering there isn't much else going on)

the icing on the cake would be hearing news that he's working with all the panther recievers on a consistent regular basis.
that would be good. i'm thinking that if he actually did, though, we wouldn't hear anything about it unless one of the receivers blabbed.

This is really good to hear. Knowing the playbook is a huge step, because obviously he needs to know the plays being called down to a tee.

It is also reassuring to know that he is well on the way to being ready to start day 1.

The next thing Cam needs to work on are the audibles, and reading defenses. He knows the plays, but he needs to know where to throw the ball.

The positives just keep coming!

one of the writers at derp made an interesting point concerning person's story...

Today in the Charlotte Observer Joseph Person wrote that Cam Newton is currently running approximately 90% of the Carolina Panthers' playbook he was given following the draft. This represents an amazing amount of retention given the Chudzinski book is rumored to be approximately 900 pages long. QB coach Chris Weinke says he has made 'minor tweaks' to Newton's mechanics, and being impressed with his dedication to the practices at IMG in Bradenton, FL.

there shouldn't be much of anyone questioning his work ethic or ability to grasp a complex NFL offense or the terminology at this point if all of this is true (and there is little reason to doubt that it is).

proof will still be in how he's able to take it to the field and he still has yet to do any of this with a real defense running at him and scheming against him, but given the situation it's hard to ask for anything more than what we are seeing from him.

What's to stop all the receivers from kicking down the door at IMG and practicing with him as long as they pay whatever it costs?
That would be nice, but since are receiving core is young I doubt they have the money to accompany Cam everywhere he goes. Cam could do like Christian Ponder and take out a loan to fly his team mates to him though. [sarcasm]
i wouldn't be surprised if something like that has happened (or will happen in cam paying for the receivers to come down and work with him once cam get paid) but that could be seen as cam making some mighty big assumptions that this is his team, his receivers, and his offense (which probably wouldn't be too far from the truth). if he's wanting to keep some harmony on the team, esp. with the rest of the QBs, then he probably doesn't need to be be doing much more than he is right now.

newton may also want to have a firmer grasp on the offense (as in having 100% installed) before he works with the receivers on his own.

lots of things to consider in his working with the panthers receivers before it actually happens. as much as i would like for it to happen, i'm not going to be upset at that not happening at the moment.

Once Cam gets paid, camp will be starting. If they're not working out together now, they're likely not going to until camp unless some additional team activities are organized by the players. That said, if Cam truly has a grasp on that much of the playbook furhter team workouts could be a great thing indeed.
