The FBI

Someone who said they were from the FBI came to my house this morning. He showed me his badge and asked me questions about my neighbor. I know nothing about this neighbor. They have lived down from us for 4 years and I could count one one hand the number of times I've seen them in their yard. I know hes in the military but that's only because the people he bought the house from told us. I've never met them, I guess you could call me a sorry ass neighbor for not introducing myself to them. I'm still unsure if the guy that came to my door really was from the FBI. He looked nothing like what I would picture someone from the FBI would look like. Weird to say the least...

FBI is involved when a person gets a security clearance or his/her clearance is upgraded. The FBI is charged with investigating, not the DOD. Normally they, the FBI, talks to neighbors, friends, contacts, even a high school or college teachers, depending on the rating.

Since you neighbor is in the military, possibly, they are just checking up on him to grant his clearance.

I had the same thing done to/on me. It freaks people out that the FBI shows up at your door and asks you about the coming and goings of one of your neighbors.

What are they like? Do they socialize or keep to themselves. Does anyone come and go in the middle of the night? Have you ever seen any diplomatic license plates there? Anything suspicious ever go on there?

They don't all look like Efrem Zimbalist Jr.

If you are old enough to remember the TV show F.B.I.

Or Fox & Scully!

He is probably being investigated to see if he's eligible for a security clearance. In many jobs in the military, you need a security clearance in order to carry out your duties. They send somebody to interview your neighbors where you lived, previous co-workers, where you went to school. They look into everything. If no negative information comes back, they grant them a security clearance. (I'm in the Coast Guard, so I know how it works)

EDIT: Sports Talk beat me to it

FBI does not normally do background investigations for security clearances. These guys do.

I think the FBI might assist them at times though, so its possible a clearance investigation is why the questions were asked. Got to admit I would probably call and confirm the individual really was FBI.

I know that investigators are contracted out. But there are jobs in the military which require a special type of top secret security clearance (sensitve compartmental information). In which case, the FBI will conduct their own investigation. They also conduct a polygraph. It can get pretty deep.

I stand corrected. I swear when I was sent over for Desert Shield (1990)(precursor to Desert Storm) The FBI did my Security Clearance and again for Bosnia. (1995)
