This video was published July 23rd (yesterday) on NFL.com, so if there was another thread with this info I apologize as I have not seen it.

Based on how things sound Jerry Richardson's role in the CBA bargaining, and knowledge of lower rookie salaries has placed Carolina in a position to re-sign their own veteran talent. I like where this is going, I know a lot had Denver pegged as a team that might enter the D-Will sweepstakes. As it's pointed out in the video DEnver has switched to a 4-3 and don't have the personnel (DT's) to run it. The vid also mentioned Denver, as well as Washington potential landing spots for Mebane, and Cofield.

If we lose out on those two and keep Williams I'll be ok, I really feel like our offense needs all the help it can get. As far as the defense, I believe we can over achieve especially with Ron at the helm. I'm comfortable with what we have considering the circumstances, though I still believe we'll bring someone in, maybe Green Bay's Cullen Jenkins (Kris' brother).

I think it is going to come down to how these players feel about the Rivera era and their particular roles as well as the money. As CJ said, winning is important to all these players. No one wants to play for a perennial loser no matter how much money they offer. At this level, the money is a given. Other working conditions matter as well. Certainly going to a winning program has to be high on the list.

If they beleive Carolina is on the rise this year and will have potent offenses and defenses, they will be fine to stay here. But 2010 took the life out of this franchise for the players and the fans. We have fallen so far in 2 years time. Hard to believe when we were at 12-4 in 2008 and getting ready for a playoff victory against Arizona that things would implode so completely and so quickly to the point that we are the doormat of the NFL.

My only worry is if conventional wisdom says that it takes at least 3-4 years for young QB to hit his stride then by the time Cam Newton really takes off DWill will be 30+. so would it really make sense to sign him to this huge deal.

Hopefully Cam Newton continues the current trends of young QB having faster success.

What contributed to rookie qbs having faster success?

Rothlisburger, Flacco, and Sanchez all had one of the best if not the best run game in football.

We need an over-competent run game if Cam is to succeed. If we lose Williams I hope we sign a top O-lineman because this team is more dependent on the run game than anything else this year.

Those teams also had very good defenses. We happen to have a very talented defense with one of the best defensive coordinators in the league as our head coach.

I honestly think we will be competitive this year.

way to misrepresent the content of the linked article.

Not the article, the video. They talk about how J-Stew wants D-Will to stay, then they begint to talk about JR's role on the board for the CBA, and the lower rookie contracts which would allow spending to re-sign vets.

The article that follows is a different series of topics all together.

FYI- You should not make posts with definitive factual type of statements when it's based on nothing but an analyst speculation. There are countless writers, analyst, ect who makes predictions like this all the time.

Misleading... especially this time of year when people are going to be committing to teams.

True..They all had great run games. I think we could be good without Dwill but the run game would be great with him here.

Where have you been???? They did not say anything all of us did not all ready know! Jr's role, rookies salary cap, how much we have to spend to get to 99% of the cap... all old non-groundbreaking news.

This is why I think they will do their best to keep hime here. If we can keep double-trouble in tact, and add Goodson's versatility on third downs I feel like we'd have a top three backfiled, if noe the best in the league.

If Cam, or (insert vet here) can play at an average or higher level then I think we will surprise a lot of the non-Panther faithful. Hopefully Otah's practically two years off brings him back healthy, and we get back to our form from the double 1,000 yard season.

    • The era that you played in, and, more importantly, who you played with actually matters. Honestly, that's why these issues will be debated forever, as it's just difficult to say that this person or that person is better when you're discussing the passage of time. As for me, after Rice, Moss and maybe Megatron and T.O., there's probably a dozen or so guys that can be argued about to the cows come home. Personally, I'm not putting Fitz, Harrison, Johnson, Evans, or especially D-Hop, Jefferson, Chase or Hill definitely in front of Smitty (and Colston ain't even in the discussion). Context and all that stuff actually matters. Things like the triple crown matter.
    • Some of those guys? Yeah honestly you can.  I would 100% take Steve Smith over Larry Fitzgerald, Harrison, even Mike Evans. He is 100% a better player than those guys in his prime. If you look at the numbers Smith is historically under targeted in comparison to his contemporaries. He was only targeted 150 times or more only once in his career. Fitzgerald for example was targeted well above that 9 different seasons. Had Smith played with Peyton, Brady, Greatest Show on Turf, or even with Warner in Arizona he would broken records. His 2008 season was ridiculous accumulating 1400 yards in 13 games on less than 80 receptions. All time he also lost a season due to injury in 04, barely played WR as a rookie. Got robbed of 1k season with Clausen. Thats easily another 1800yds minimum that should have been tacked on to his #s. The only guys I’d say for certain are better than Smith are Rice, Moss, TO, Megatron, Julio Jones, Antonio Brown.
    • I parked in this lot a few times. It would take over and hour to get out of that lot after games. Never again
