How quickly will the narrative about JR in the media change

You have to like how the offense has been upgraded so far. Honestly I don't know how to act. We finally have a franchise QB and now a first round TE. Both positions that Fox ignored for the most part.

With our aggressive defense under Rivera, we actually could be a pretty big threat on offense and defense.

If nothing else JR did exactly what he said would do. he has been aggressive in free agency, has make great strides to fix the offense and has patched up holes in the defense. I am pretty excited about the season which after last year is a total turnaround for me. Amazing what a few draft picks and a 100 million dollars can do for the team, LOL.

We HOPE we have a franchise QB. We have nothing but a rookie who has never taken a snap in the NFL right now.

I like what he has done this offseason, However, we don't have a clue what we have in him yet.

We have our franchise quarterback whether he pans out or not. I agree what you are saying about being unproven and it is true that most folks think of the term "great quarterback" when they think of franchise quarterback. But he will be our starter for several years even if if he doesn't pan out. And I think it is only a matter of time before he ends being our franchise guy. Look at Sanchez. He is the franchise guy in New York despite putting up generally pedestrian numbers.

Just remember we had a franchise quarterback of the future this time last year, too.

I think we'll be much better on offense, but I think as much of that is the change in system as any individual signing, though obviously those are important too. Together, if the chips fall right, we're going to be a competitive team.

Actually it says more about Hurney.

As I've said before, by the end of the year JR will spend the same amount as 31 other owners in the NFL.... So this says nothing about him being cheap or not when it is a requirement!!!!!!!

You confuse cap with salary. Our cap will be the same as other teams but our salary will be much bigger. With over 100 million spent on signing bonuses and 73 million already emcumbered in salaries, Richardson will spend upwards of 200 million in salary this year which is far more than most teams will spend.

Maybe some folks considered Clausen a franchise guy but seriously, I am no expert on quarterbacks and I could see right away that he wasn't going to be the one.

The organization - and yes, some fans - thought Clausen was the future, our future franchise quarterback (in the sense of a guy you are building around for the future, not in the sense of being THE MOST ELITEMOFO THIS SIDE OF MANNING that this forum likes to refer to it as). I don't give a poo what people around here thought of him when we drafted him... I liked him, but the organization itself told him he was our future franchise quarterback. There's some postgame interview with him from later in the season where Gantt or someone is like "So do they still tell you that you are their franchise guy?" and he was like "No they haven't told me that since they drafted me"

The reality is a lot can change between offseasons... I just really hope that the offseason work Cam has put in is going to pay off and he'll give us a legitimate aerial attack again.

The cap includes bonuses paid.... The cap is now actual cash spent.

The cap ceiling includes bonuses which are prorated over the life of the contract. Salary includes all of the money actually spent in the year in which it is paid to the player. So a 30 million signing bonus on a 6 year contract counts as 30 million toward the yearly salary but only 5 million to the cap. For the purposes of the cap floor it is the same as salary but not for the purposes of a cap ceiling. Otherwise we would be 70 million over the cap already this year.

Okay, props to you.... I've researched... your right, I did not understand the new rules correctly.
