Smith may get that quarterback this year if rookie No. 1 draft pick Cam Newton can materialize into the player the Panthers believe he can be.

Newton has an infectious smile.

He also comes with a little more street credibility than Clausen, a point that can’t be underestimated. For the past several weeks Smith has been working out in Charlotte with Newton, not Clausen. Sure, Clausen has been on the other side of the country, but Newton is a guy Smith may see a little bit of himself in.

“We mesh,” Smith said of his relationship with Newton.

At Smith’s youth football camp in June, he and Newton played touch football with 9- and 10-year-olds for hours. When the kids were out of energy, Smith and Newton were still going. He’s a little shier than Smith, but Newton is as much of a kid as Smith is.

Maybe he’s the one who can help Smith find his smile again.

newton more shy than smith? interesting.

i can see newton having a really positive effect on smith. the guys positive attitude is contagious.

And if you switch it around, I think Smitty is going to have a great effect on Cam too. To be a rookie and shown respect by Smith, he's going to take that pretty seriously and work hard to keep it I think.

Great points! Definitely a symbiotic deal here... This is gonna be an awesome season. And Cam didn't even have to bring him any Cactus Coolers.

clausen just has that face everyone wants to punch no one wonder steve smith didn't practice with him.

Steve has had a hard time not punching non-punchable faces in the past, so I don't blame him for having a hard time being around such a punchable face. :boxing_smiley:

That being said, at the Fan Fest and Caravan Tours (if it's still called that), they should bring Clausen along and have a "face punching" booth, free with pictures after the punch.

    • Okay so he and we are acknowledging that Bryce is still making mistakes and not recognizing basic coverages in his third season. So what does he do to prepare? Remember before the draft the entire hype around him revolved around not only his ability to improvise when the play breaks down on the field but his dedication to preparation off the field in the film room. So if all of this is happening and his footwork is still anywhere between mediocre and horrific in any given play what is he doing in the offseason and in between games? This and his elite processing was supposed to be his key selling point. Then leadership was the sprinkle on top and let's be honest that's lacking at best too. So what is it that Bryce Young excels at in any phase of the game right now?....
    • Ironically enough what I think will ultimately do Bryce in/will be why he won’t make it in the league won’t be his size concerns, but his mental makeup.   He is a historical outlier in size and due to that has smaller and stricter windows, but he *has* shown he can play, but only when it doesn’t matter. The best football we’ve seen from Bryce was that preseason Buffalo drive and then down the stretch last year after we were already eliminated   Remember the look on JJs face last night after that TD pass to Jones towards the end of the game? Dude looked like a straight killer. That’s the face of a dude that’s locked the fug in, completely ignoring any and all noise. Reminded me of prime Cams infamous nod prior to orchestrating a game winning drive right after seeing the Saints take the lead.  Probably hyperbolic but that shot convinced me JJ will be a dude for the Vikings. Yes they have a great staff but that kind of mentality isn’t something that’s taught.    to succeed as a young QB in this league you need some level of that coldness/killer mentality in you to push through the adversity that will inevitably come when you have a bad game, throw a pick 6, or your line gets blown up.    i don’t see any of that in Bryce. I want to be wrong, and hope someone can quote this post with a “wow that aged like milk!” someday, but I don’t think it’s happening.     if Bryce had that mentality in him, I honestly think he could play and work through it, but I just don’t think he does
