Reports already saying Asante Samuel available for trade, should we go get?

Its all about our value over another team's value. He will likely be a backup here, barring injury to a starter. Whereas another team would value him higher if he would step in and be a starter in their system. It makes sense to trade him, especially bc he is in the last year of his contract if im not mistaken and will likely walk after the season to be a starter.

PS: Find me a Free Agent thats averaged 7 INT's a season for his last 5 years. If you can do that then I will agree that there are free agents out there as good as asante. BTW 7 INT's last year shows he isnt really slowing down. A lot of corners actually get better with age bc a lot of elite corners can adapt their game to them losing a step. Look at players like Ronde Barber and Charles Woodson for example.

According to Football Outsiders, it looks like he was the best CB in the league last year.

http://www.footballoutsiders.com/player/16833/asante-samuel

Number 1 in Yards Per Play vs Pass, Stop Rate, and Tied for league lead of INT's. According to FO he was only throw at 34 times last year.

ok...looking at that stuff as well as the other stuff they had and talking in twitter to the guy at PFF, he might be the best guy. dude was only targeted 41 times last year according to PFF (who have the best snap by snap info). dude was just impressive.

a couple things i was told about him:

ProFootbalFocus @_raynman Great ball skills and read and react ability in zone, jumps routes like nobody, but not v physical in man/v run

ProFootbalFocus @_raynman Awful tackler, will throw himself in for kill shots at times but often comes off worse

i asked him about covering the slot (which is a huge issue here) and he said that he doesn't work it much at all. less than 20 snaps last year.

sooo...i'm thinking that maybe he is the best option out there. if we fix things in the Dline interior (run stuffing DT in addition to the run stuffing NT) then his lack of skill vs. the run might not be that much of an issue.

familiarity with the system would be nice. if they can swing it...getting a starter of that quality for a backup (although a valuable one), is something that i can get behind. i wouldn't even mind just giving up a 2nd for him. considering our record with 2nd rounders, we could/have done much worse.

consider my tune changed. if it only mattered to anyone....

i had no idea there was actually doubt about asante samuel being a good corner, i thought it was more that most of us thought his price would just be far too high for us in terms of what the Eagles likely wanted for him. He's a real ball hawk, very very aggressive against the pass.

meh...i feel good about the guys we have in rotation, esp. if with an improved interior.

CB is a bigger concern, imo.

yeah, agreed. CB is much weaker right now.

fwiw...if our main concern was finding someone to cover the slot, the absolute best option was chris carr who is just about to re-sign with the ravens.

even if we bring in samuel, covering the slot is going to be tough. cap't can't do it. we'd have to hope that either brumley or hogan can pull it off. another option would be to let godfrey cover it and go with 3 safeties in nickel situations instead of 3 CBs.

Why trade away more draft picks when there are some pretty good FA corners still available?

Depends on the draft pick. Asante Samuel is an extremely good corner who would make an immediate impact on our D, moreso than any other FAs available. He's one of the best in the league when it comes to ball hawking. However, he's not a long term solution, so the price would have to be reasonable. Since we're talking about the Eagles, I can't see the price being reasonable, and I expect someone to give up way too much for him.

depends on if you want the best available option or just "good enough".

if chris carr goes back to baltimore (which it looks like is the case) then that leaves us with cromartie (who will probably be going back to the jets or to dallas), and either nate clements, carlos rodgers, or kelly jennings (blah).

if cromartie and carr are taken off the list of prospects, then bringing in samuel easily becomes the best option, even if we have to trade for him.
