This is how I drew my script," says Gaither. "I'm just thrilled to be here. It's been a long trip and it's not like I'm at the end of my career. Hopefully I can do some things that will make the Panthers want to keep me, and finish my career here."

If Davis is what he was in 2009, the Panthers get a deal. They get Davis playing off middle linebacker Jon Beason, get him chasing down ball-carriers and running free. If he's not what he was, they lose $8 million.

To the extent that an adult can look happy high-stepping over five blue pads and picking up a football rolled at him when he finishes, Davis looks happy. Instead of watching teammates, he becomes one.

"Oh, man, it's extremely exciting," he says. "It's definitely been a humbling experience to be away from the game as long as I have. But today was a great day."

I was watching the drill pictured in the linked article--there is still some loss of fluidity/speed/agility from the right knee (with a brace on). Observing Davis standing and looking at the weight bearing/carrying angle of his hips/knees I'm a little concerned about future injury. Nevertheless he looked the best among those practicing.

Gaither creates alot of noise, but at least in drill work didn't look like he was giving it all and was called out by the coach.

Gaither was definitely the most vocal guy at camp the day I was there. At one point the crowd cheered for a completed pass and he turned around and yelled "you gotta cheer for the defense some too now!". He had a lot of energy and he's the kind of guy you can pull for. If nothing else should be a good special teams guy.

    • I know it a real homer take but Im not sure Id slam dunk take that list over Smitty.  Smith just played a different way, he had an ability to just take over a game as a matter of will.  The catch against the giants where he caught it and took a helmet that broke his arm mid air, the games against DeAngelo Hall, 05 Bears playoffs, Ice Up Son, the revenge game against us. Those other WRs may have better stat books but love him or hate him, good guy or bad, Smith just played a different game and when he did look out.
    • Absolutely would have to be anther young scorer with either ELC time or a long term contract...    Could see maybe Kyrou or Robertson.... But I really just dont see him being traded you dont trade your leading post season scorer on a long term deal when he isn't even in his prime yet..   not to mention unless you get more than one of those guys at best it would be lateral with unknown team chemistry.
    • was driving down a two lane rural highway this morning as was reminded of this thread.   Minding my own going 60 in the 55. This massive Chevy rolls up behind me so close all I see is grill. Along comes a passing zone and M firm in the right lane.  Does doofus drop over and pass me? Nope he backs off to a solid 2 second separation.   500 feet after the passing zone you can imagine where he was. Back up my ass.
