The reality of Clausen's good night

CRA

Recommended Posts

Drive 1 - result was a pick 6 on a horrific throw.

Drive 2 - 3 and out. Ending w/ a Clausen sack and Clausen's trademarked horrible play in a NFL pocket.

Drive 4 - another 3 and out.

Drive 5. another 3 and out. - trademarked Clausen pocket play hurting the drive

The highlight of his night

Drive 3 - 2 big plays by Williams. A run and a screen (extension of the ground game). Clausen makes a downfield throw to the endzone....but put the ball behind Olsen who adjusted for a TD grab.

Now this thread isn't purely meant to knock Clausen. Just pointing out the reality he clearly didn't play better than Cam Newton like so many are pimping around a variety of threads. Clausen really didn't do much and was a mixed bag of both good and bad during each of those drives.

this thread isn't a Cam outplayed Clausen thread either as that statement is not being made.

Cam Newton had a better night, but I think Clausen looked much improved over last year. As far as the pick goes, I'm not sure if you can put 100% of the blame on him. Still, it happened and fortunately he regained his composure and came back strong with that touchdown to Olsen.

Like I said before, I think this is Cam's team. With the first pick, the team has too much invested in him and Clausen will never overpower that. Clausen just needs to become traid bait and I'm hoping he does... allowing us to get SOMETHING for him. I don't see how anybody wins - the Panthers or Clausen - if he remains a failure.

Fwiw, I don't think that Clausen played great by any stretch. But he came back nicely from the int. On a scale of 1-10, he was a 6, Newton was a 5, and Anderson a 7. And they all outperformed all the Giants QB's.

Fwiw, its still early, but I like our Qback situation better now than at this point last year. If Newton can improve his midrange passing/decision making, he has the potential be a real star.

On a somewhat related notie, I liked the comment in the Observer this morning. When Clausen got sacked, it was Clausen's fault. When Newton got sacked, it was the offensive line breaking down.

That's why I don't get the few who are still knocking Cam and touting Clausen as being better...

Clausen didn't look much different from last year besides the one scoring drive.

That is still better than what he looked like last year, but he still looked really shaky for the most part.

My thoughts as well were that Clausen looked pretty rough, but did bounce back and make a couple of nice plays. I thought the INT was almost completely on Clausen and he did take too long in the pocket on several plays.

Cam wasn't perfect, but I thought he looked better... even under pressure, with his mobility he can escape some. I think the next pre-season game will tell us whether Clausen's play has really improved or not.

There is some truth to that.....not saying it is 100% correct but Clausen has proven he helps defenses out when they pressure.

on the flip side, Cam has a good interntal clock and reacts well to pressure.

Saw examples of that being true for both on Saturday and that was true for both in college.

Fwiw, I think they did have the leash on Newton, or he had it on himself. He might be more willing to run as his career progresses, but for now he wants to become a passer, and I think thats a good thing.

hey, man...I can compliment the kid and in some aspects I have defended him when few others haven't.

His issues in the pocket create a host of other ones....and the result is bad. He doesn't fit. I feel bad for him. Worst thing to ever happen to him was for Carolina to draft him. We basically put his NFL career and shot at success in the league in a hole he may never get out of.

I don't dislike him anywhere near what you may think. But that is understandable b/c I know how I come off on this topic here.

    • fuging Christ dude this isnt hard.  Like at all.  I get you simping for this poo team is your thing but sometimes you have to look at reality.   Even removing his bum knee from the equation, none of this made sense.  He is 31.  He has been paid handsomely for his service here.  He was currently under contract for this season.  Why in the holy fug did anything have to be done 2 weeks before the season started.   The people for this move, in this thread are saying A) He deserved it (this is the nfl it doesnt work like that  B) It frees up cap space (then why in the fug didnt we do this in Feb or C) You logic (We are getting a deal at 53 million guaranteed for the next 3 years.   You realize with this deal we cannot cut or trade his ass for 3 years.  You understand this right?   So in my opinion we should have let this ride into the offseason and go from there, what he is going to threaten to walk, big fuging deal he would be 32 on a chronically bad knee, what other moronic franchise is going to give him 40 million up front?  It wasnt going to happen.   And you are acting like its impossible to replace a 32 year old RT with a bum knee.  Just go and draft someone, move Icky to RT.  There are tons of options instead of extending this dude 2 weeks before the fuging season.  The truth is Morgan and the shitheads in the FO fell for this dudes crying act and got all sentimental and shelled out another ext.  We are a poverty ass franchise that doesnt act professionally
    • Amazing what the prospect of being traded to Carolina will do for contract negotiations.
    • 5 Im glad football is back but after the embarrassment that was the browns pre season game where our starting D made Sanders look like a serviceable NFL QB, I lost hope again for a successful Panthers campaign this year.  I do hope I’m wrong!
